For example, Salvador Dali was incapable of staying far away from his birthplace in Costa Brava (where you can still visit his theatre-museum, house-museum, and his wife Gala’s castle). Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, where you can still see some of his most unique artworks, alongside hidden gems like Horta de San Joan near Tarragona, where the painter lived and created in secret for a year. While many large cities in Europe face the issue of over-tourism – like Barcelona and Mallorca – and may not seem as welcoming to travelers as they once did, I assure you that many lesser-known towns in Spain are eager to welcome tourists. As someone who travels across the country non-stop, I often speak with local bar and restaurant owners in lesser-known parts of Spain. The situation in central Spain is challenging – commonly referred to in the media as “España vaciada” (the emptied Spain). People are moving to cities, closing their businesses due to a lack of jobs, which is a widespread issue, but this trend is particularly difficult for Spaniards from regions like Aragon or Castilla-La Mancha. Around 90% of international travelers in Spain flock to well-established tourist areas. So, when you hear about protests or tourists not being welcomed, remember that this mostly applies to certain over-touristed areas, not the entire country. Spain is still full of welcoming locals and friendly people who genuinely appreciate travelers and understand the important role tourism plays in supporting the local economy.

Spaniards are also very social: Spain has more bars per capita than any other EU country. However, the general level of English across the country remains average, especially outside of the main tourist areas, so learning a bit of Spanish will be incredibly helpful for those who want to interact with locals.
