Unique Experiences in Greece

My love for Greece

If only the World wasn´t so big – I´d always end up somewhere in Greece…I am never tired of traveling to this magical country.

Charming villages, tiny streets, a surreal white-blue architecture, crystal clear water, cordial greek mentality, and the most amazing food ever… A spirit of family and traditions is everywhere – Greece feels like home, no matter where you come from! There are so many top experience in Greece to put on you travel bucket list!

Nevertheless, it´s not only a matter of beautiful landscapes or delicious food. The achievements of Greek civilization in math, art and science fascinate me. Our modern alphabet, democracy, the Olympic Games, the eternal ideas of the Ancient Greek thinkers like Aristotle … even Ancient Greek Stories are still told today. And who doesn’t like films about superheroes and monsters?! All this can be traced back to the ancient culture that existed 3000 years ago.

My Bucket-List Experiences in Greece

1. Olimpia: Where it all started

First of all, let´s admit – Greeks changed sport. Olympia was famous beyond the Greek borders for hosting the Olympic Games every four years, starting in 776 BCE. It´s what inspired our modern Olympic Games which began in 1896.

And do you know where the marathons came from? The Greek legend tells that a soldier named Pheidippides, who fought at the battle of Marathon in 490BC, ran 26 miles to Athens to bring the news after the Greek victory.

So, if you love sports and want to step back into its history – visiting Olimpia should absolutely be one of your top experiences in Greece. Can you imagine?! – It all started here.

And even though the Olympic Games stadium was smaller than I expected (honestly, if no one told me it was THE stadium – I’d never guess), but being able to visit the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games feels exciting anyway.

2. Athens: Visiting Acropolis

The universal symbol of the impressive Greek Civilization – what can you add to this?! Acropolis is one of the most impressive historical sites ever and one of the top experiences in Greece.

Although, during my first visit Athens has left me with mixed feelings. We´ve come across several demonstrations, and at some point I was having my doubts on whether it was my kind of city at all. Nevertheless, walking through the remains of all those temples definitely gave me some inspiration to dive into the history books and Greek Mythology. Besides, the views were simply wonderful. I wish I could travel back and explore Athenes off the beaten track.

3. Mykonos Lifestyle

Mykonos is definitely the fanciest island in Greece: everything is overpriced and yet you can’t help falling in love with those white houses. It is supposed to be a great place for parties&nightlife, which in our case was narrowed down to dining out ( I know, we are boring married couple: can´t help it).

And by the way, you know how Mykonos is famous for its beaches and blue see-through waters, right? Well, I stepped on a sea urchin there! So keep this in mind – you can’t swim everywhere (no matter how crystal the water looks) – check this list of the best Mykonos beaches before visiting!

4.Getting lost on Crete

Crete is quite important in Greek history, any ideas why? – Well, the almighty Zeus was born here. Therefore, aside from all the paradise beaches and charming little villages across the island – Crete is full of unique historic sites.

Moreover, once you drive away from the touristic places and big main cities – you still can discover the authentic Greek island lifestyle. I haven’t had this experience on any other Greek island. Maybe, cause Crete was the biggest: driving through all those mountain roads towards Kato Zakros (where we stayed) was an experience itself. A couple of times we stopped near old local villages with no tourists on the radar and at times it even felt like we time-traveled.

If you plan to visit Crete, you should really do your research before going! There are simply so many great things to see and do in Crete. You’re be spoilt for choices, but unless you have several weeks for this trip – it´s unlikely you’d be able to see all of it.

5. Santorini: Views of a lifetime

Santorini is definitely one of the most romantic travel experiences around the world and Oía is simply one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. These views will leave you speechless, it’s one of those places you must see at least once in a lifetime.

Also, Santorini is known for some of the most beautiful sunsets across the globe. Long story short: I feel like words fail to describe places like Santorini or Mykonos. Fotos of white washed buildings and blue see-through waters do slightly better here.

Be careful with visiting during the peak season (or summer months). As one of the most romantic places around the world, Santorini constantly attracts crowds of tourists – you wouldn´t want this to kill the magic of this trip, would you?

6. 60 million-year-old rocks of Meteora

I don’t believe you´ve never come across a picture of Meteora in Central Greece. This UNESCO protected World Heritage site is a 4h drive from Athens, famous for its 60 million-year-old pinnacles of rocks. Monks lived here from the 9th century and by the beginning of the 14th century, monasteries were built. Can you imagine the unique atmosphere of this place?!

The old magic of Meteora slightly reminds me of the Spanish Montserrat Monastery near Barcelona. Although Meteora definitely feels more ancient and spiritual, in my opinion. You know how you often feel the energy of a place and its either hit or miss: well, one quick glimpse is enough to fall enough with Meteora, I can assure you!
