Top Colorful Places in Spain

What is the most colorful town in Spain?

Villajoyosa on the Costa Blanca is the most famous colorful town in Spain, known for its brightly painted seaside houses. However, Cudillero in Asturias is not far behind, with its multi-colored homes nestled into the hillside overlooking the northern coast of Spain.

Visiting colorful places around the world

The impact of colors on emotions has been a topic of interest for years, and numerous studies now prove that the colors around us can significantly influence our mood. Personally, I feel this deeply – sometimes colors boost my energy even more than coffee! Just imagine bright sunny yellows, lush tropical greens, deep blues, and vibrant oranges – doesn’t that already spark a rush of endorphins? Colors have a way of lifting our spirits, creating feelings of joy, calm, or excitement, depending on the shades and combinations.

Now, when you combine the natural inspiration that colors bring with the thrill of discovering new places, visiting the world’s most colorful destinations becomes even more magical. This evokes feelings of wanderlust, curiosity, and creativity. So, if you’re looking for a boost of inspiration, visiting the most colorful places in Spain could be your personal antidote to routine – infusing your travels with both beauty and a renewed sense of energy.

The Most Colorful Villages in Spain

Villajoyosa in Alicante

Located just a few kilometers south of the famous Benidorm, Villajoyosa is renowned for its great beach and its vibrant, colorful fishing houses that line the seafront, creating a picturesque and inviting atmosphere. This charming town is one of the true gems of the Costa Blanca coastline, offering a more relaxed and authentic alternative to its more tourist-heavy neighbors. Villajoyosa is a perfect destination to pick up some unique food souvenirs from Spain, as it is home to three small chocolate factories, with Valor being the most famous. Villajoyosa’s laid-back charm, cultural heritage, and local delicacies make it a popular destination of the Alicante region.

Port Saplaya near Valencia

Port Saplaya, often referred to by locals as “Valencia’s Little Venice,” is a charming coastal town known for its picturesque canals, colorful Mediterranean-style houses, and peaceful atmosphere, especially in the off-season. It offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, where you can enjoy a coffee or take a boat tour. In addition to its tranquil setting, Port Saplaya is almost a part of Valencia, making it an ideal destination for a relaxing day trip.

Cudillero in Asturias

Cudillero is often considered one of the most picturesque fishing villages of Asturias, and it’s a must-stop on any Northern Spain road trip. It’s also one of the top places to visit in Asturias, thanks to its unique charm and beauty. Despite its popularity with tourists, Cudillero maintains a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, tucked between dramatic cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. The village is famous for its colorful, terraced houses that seem to cascade down the hillside toward the harbor, creating a picture-perfect view.

Juzcar in Andalusia

Júzcar is one of the tiniest and most colorful villages in Spain, and a must-see stop in Southern Spain. Before 2011, Júzcar was like many other typical “white” villages in Andalusia, known for its traditional whitewashed architecture. However, everything changed when Sony Pictures launched the idea of creating “The Blue Smurfs Village” as part of their promotional campaign for The Smurfs movie. The locals embraced the project, painting their village in bright blue to match the theme. What was initially meant to be a temporary stunt turned into the village’s iconic trademark, and today, Júzcar is a vibrant blue destination that attracts tourists from all over the world. It’s not every day you get to feel like you’re stepping into the world of the Smurfs! It is such a fun place to visit in Spain with kids. You can check out more photos in this post.

Orotava in Tenerife

There is no shortage of beautiful places on the Canary Islands, with some landscapes appearing almost otherworldly in their beauty. Tenerife, as one of the most popular Spanish islands, is known for its diverse tourist attractions, lush gardens, mysterious legends, and charming small towns.

Orotava is one of the most vibrant and colorful places on the island, particularly when the locals celebrate Corpus Christi (around May-June). During this time, the streets and the main town square are decorated with intricate carpets made from sand, flowers, and seeds. This celebration creates a stunning visual display, making Orotava a must-visit destination for a splash of colors. However, if you’re visiting Spain in winter and your travel dates don’t coincide with Corpus Christi, you can still experience a piece of this tradition by visiting the Carpet Museum in Orotava. The museum showcases the history and artistry behind these beautiful floral carpets, making it one of Spain’s hidden gems.

Fuenterrabia/The Basque Country

One of my recent discoveries during a road trip across the Basque Country is Fuenterrabia (also called Hondarribia), one of the most colorful places in Northern Spain. It is filled with traditional Basque architecture, colorful wooden balconies, cobblestone streets, and vibrant flower pots. This hidden gem can’t be missed if you’re only staying a few days in San Sebastián.

Fanzara in Castellon

Fanzara is one of the hidden gems of the Valencia Region and a must-visit destination in the Province of Castellón. This vibrant small town has an incredible story behind it. Fanzara was on the brink of being added to the list of “Spain’s dying villages” until its streets were transformed into an open-air museum. Today, graffiti can be found everywhere – you can read more about this transformation in this post. If you enjoy street art, Spain is home to at least five unique graffiti villages that are like open-air museums, including Penelles and Alfamén. You can learn more about them in this post.
