Exploring the Pyrenees in Summer
Are the Pyrenees worth visiting in summer?
Conveniently set between Spain and France, the region of the Pyrenees is particularly famous for its stunning landscapes, charming small towns, and unmatched hiking trails. So, summer is a great moment to enjoy the beautiful nature of the region. Also, those who are looking for new adventurous things to do in Spain will discover that the Pyrenees is a great destination for thrill-seekers around the world. The region is full of unique things to do both in summer and winter. You can check out all of my trips and itineraries under the hashtag Pyrenees. As one of my favorite Spanish destinations, this mountain range keeps me gravitating back all the time.
Weather in the Pyrenees in summer
Summer temperatures in the Pyrenees range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) in the valleys, with cooler conditions at higher altitudes. Even on the hottest days, the mountains offer a refreshing escape from the heat of the Mediterranean coast and cities. However, it’s important to pack layers, as temperatures drop significantly with altitude, and it tends to be much windier at higher elevations. Having visited the Pyrenees in June, July, and August, I’ve never felt too hot there. Most hikes in the region are either shaded by greenery or take place at higher altitudes, where it’s cooler and windier. That said, it’s essential to use sunscreen, as even though it may not feel hot, the sun is still intense in the mountains and can easily burn your skin.

Top Facts About the Pyrenees Mountains
- The Pyrenees stretch for about 491 km (305 miles), from the Mediterranean Sea in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west, forming a natural border between Spain and France.
- The highest peak in the Pyrenees is Aneto, located in Spain, standing at 3,404 meters (11,168 feet).
- The Pyrenees are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare species like bearded vulture, so it is a popular birdwatching destination.
- The Pyrenees are a culturally rich destination. In Spain alone, the Pyrenees span four distinct regions, each with its own unique food, language, and traditions: Catalonia, Aragon, Navarra, and a small part of the Basque Country. Additionally, the Pyrenees are home to Andorra, one of Europe’s smallest states.
- Several areas of the Pyrenees, such as the Ordesa National Park (one of the first national parks in Spain) and the Romanesque Churches of Vall de Boí, have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites for their natural and cultural significance.

What is the most beautiful part of the Pyrenees?
The Pyrenees are filled with breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, but I would especially highlight five areas as the most stunning: Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, Val d’Aran, Aigüestortes National Park, Vall de Boí, and Gavarnie (in France).
Top Things to Do in the Pyrenees in Summer
Whether you’re an adventurer or simply looking to relax in nature, the Pyrenees have something for everyone. Here are the top things to do during your summer trip, followed by a list of summer activities across most of the region. While this article mainly focuses on the Spanish Pyrenees (as it’s where I have traveled the most), I will also include a brief summary of the top outdoor activities in the French Pyrenees at the end of this post.
Hiking
The Pyrenees are my favorite place for hiking in Spain, offering trails for all skill levels. You can check out my ultimate Pyrenees hiking guide in this post.

Medieval villages
Exploring charming villages in the Pyrenees is one of my favorite summer activities. These hidden gems are full of history, with cobbled streets, stone buildings, and picturesque flower pots. You can check out my list of favorite Pyrenees villages in this post.

Spa
A spa experience feels epic on any active holiday. There are three main spas in the Pyrenees, with Andorra’s Caldea being the most famous. The issue I have with this spa is that it’s extremely popular – in the afternoons, it gets so crowded that it feels more like a waterpark. On my last weekend in Andorra, we booked an early bird entrance, and I really enjoyed it, but by around 10:30, it was already starting to feel too busy. The Balneario de Panticosa is one of the oldest spas, dating back to Roman times, and its waters are known for their healing properties. I enjoyed this place a lot. Although it’s an older spa that could benefit from renovations, it was far less crowded than Caldea. I also felt that its waters had a much more relaxing effect on my body than a typical spa. Another great option is the spa at Hotel Monasterio de Boltaña in the Pyrenees, which also has a lovely spa.

Wildlife Watching
The Pyrenees are home to diverse wildlife and are a popular birdwatching destination in Spain. You can also visit sanctuaries like Lacuniacha Park, which I explored during my weekend in the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Ski lifts
While all ski lifts are essential in the Pyrenees during winter, a few remain open in summer, such as those in Panticosa, Astún, or Funicamp in Andorra. These lifts take travelers to the start of high-altitude trails. However, they’re also a great option for those who don’t want to hike but still want to enjoy panoramic views of the mountains and glacier lakes. It’s a fun activity for families visiting the Pyrenees with kids – mine were amazed when they took their first ski lift ride all the way to the top!

Cycling
The Pyrenees are famous among cyclists for their challenging climbs and scenic roads, making it a popular activity in the region for those who love exploring new places by bike. Although I haven’t tried it myself yet, it’s a must-do for cycling enthusiasts.
Canyoning and Rafting
For thrill-seekers, the Pyrenees offer plenty of adventure sports. Canyoning through the gorges and rivers is a great way to cool off, while rafting in places, like Noguera Pallaresa River provides an adrenaline-pumping experience.
Lakes and Waterfalls
The Pyrenees are home to many stunning lakes and waterfalls, and while some of them require a hike (like Lago de San Mauricio in Spain’s Aigüestortes National Park), others can be reached with a short walk from the parking lot (like Cascada del Broto or Ojos del Diablo).

Delicious local foods
The Pyrenees is a great destination for those who enjoy comfort food all year round. The region is especially great for fans of local and homemade dishes, as the Pyrenees is full of villages that still preserve a traditional feel. You can read more about local food in this post.

Ancient churches
The Pyrenees region holds significant religious importance in Europe, as the famous Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James) passes through this mountain range. On the French side, you’ll find Lourdes, while on the Spanish side, there are the Romanesque churches of Vall de Boí, the Mozarabic churches in Serralbo, the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña (one of the most unique monasteries in Spain), and Roncesvalles.

Zipline
The zipline in Valle de Tena is a fantastic summer activity in the Pyrenees and was the highlight of one of my first visits. As one of the longest and highest ziplines in Europe, it allows visitors to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks in an adventurous way. I expected it to be an adrenaline-pumping activity, but it wasn’t too fast, and I absolutely enjoyed flying over those epic mountain landscapes.
