10 Days in the Pyrenees of Spain Itinerary
Visiting the Pyrenees of Spain
Since the most of questions I get on the blog are about the Spanish Pyrenees, I thought of creating new road trip itineraries you can all enjoy this summer. The Pyrenees is one of my favorite places in Spain to avoid the crowds while testing unique mountain trails and exploring the otherworldly beautiful landscapes.
Under the hashtag Pyrenees you can check all of my past trips and itineraries across the region. This mountain range keeps me gravitating back every year. So, I hope you will also enjoy the outcome of my numerous trips to the Pyrenees and use it in your travel planning.
This week I will be sharing a 10-day Pyrenees Itinerary: An Ultimate Road Trip from Madrid, and the next one – a 7-day Pyrenees Vacation from Barcelona. By combining these two routes, you can easily spend epic 2-3 weeks in the mountains without missing any of the top beautiful places to visit in the Pyrenees.

10-day Pyrenees Itinerary: An Epic Road Trip from Madrid
The Pyrenees mountain range is spread between 3 Spanish Autonomous Communities: Navarra, Aragon, and Catalonia.
You can easily spend weeks in each of the regions, but for this 10-day Pyrenees Itinerary, I’ve tried to gather the most unique places and experiences from all over, so that those of you visiting for the first time, could also get a general impression of the Pyrenees, and pick your favorites for the future trips.
Day 1 – Madrid to Pamplona
Since this 10-day Pyrenees Itinerary starts in Madrid, you can either spend one day in the city or make the most of the drive while visiting new Spanish landmarks along the way.
So, what´s on the road? – On the way from Madrid to Pamplona you can make a stop at:
- the iconic Burgos Cathedral – one of the most beautiful cathedrals of the Iberian Peninsula
- Numantia Celtiberian Ruins (known for its heroic resistance to the Roman Empire: you can read more in my Soria post)
- Interesting small towns on the road – Sigueza, Medinacelli, Buitrago del Lozoya, and Aranda de Duero
- If you like underrated cities in Spain – consider making a stop at Soria or Vitoria-Gasteiz
Each of these places is worth visiting, but depending on your travel preferences, you can pick one and drop by on the road from Madrid to Pamplona.

Days 2/3 Pamplona & The Pyrenees of Navarra
Staying near Pamplona
The city of Pamplona is one of the most popular places to see in the region of Navarra, famous worldwide for San Fermin, one of the most iconic Spanish festivals, so vividly described in Hemingway´s Fiesta.
Pamplona is the closest city to one of the Spanish magical forests, Selva de Irati, the gem of the Pyrenees of Navarra. I suggest you spend at least a few days of this 10-day Pyrenees Itinerary in the area.
On the map below, you can see the hotel´s offer near Pamplona, in case you prefer to stay outside of the city.

Top places to visit in the Pyrenees of Navarra:
- Selva de Irati ( check the list of hikes on the official website)
- Xorroxin Waterfall (the hiking trail starts in the small town of Erratzu)
- Señorio de Bertiz Natural Park (you can check the map of local hikes on the official website)
- Roncesvalles (aside from unique trails, like Ibañeta to Lindux, Roncesvalles is the starting point of the famous pilgrim itinerary El Camino de Santiago; plus, the iconic location of one of the most important battles in the history of Spain – Batalla de Roncesvalles)
Days 4/5/6 Ainsa & The Pyrenees of Aragon
Staying near Ainsa
Hit the road from Pamplona to Ainsa, to explore the next part of this 10-day Pyrenees Itinerary – the mountains of Aragon.
On the road, you can make a stop to visit Real Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña, one of the secret and beautiful Spanish monasteries, Sos del Rey Catolico (one of the most charming medieval villages of Spain), or the Javier Castle (one of the dreamiest castles in Spain).
You can pick one of these places and enjoy a cultural tour while on the road from Pamplona to Ainsa.
The village of Ainsa is considered one of the most beautiful small towns in the whole of Spain. It is a great place to stay for exploring the Pyrenees of Aragon. On the map below you can check all the rentals available nearby.

Top places to visit in the Pyrenees of Aragon:
- Ordesa y Monte Perdido, one of my favorite Spanish National Parks
- Añisclo Canyon
- Canfranc Train station
- Astun Ski Lift & the hiking trail of 7 Ibones de Astun
- the town of Jaca & its Museum of Military Miniatures
- Sorrosal waterfall in the village of Boltaña
- Tirolina Valle de Tena (a popular spot for adventure lovers in Spain)
- Cueva de las Güixas, one of the most unique Spanish Caves (previous booking is required)

Days 7/8 Vielha & The Pyrenees of Catalonia
Staying near Vielha
Drive from Ainsa to Vielha, one of the most popular towns in the Pyrenees of Catalonia.
Vielha is located close to the famous ski resort of Baqueira-Beret, but during the warmer seasons, this whole area (called Vall D´Aran) is a great starting point to explore the Pyrenees of Catalonia.
You can see more alternative rentals near Vielha on the map below.

Top things to see do in the Pyrenees of Catalonia:
- Aiguestortes National Park, one of the top Spanish National Parks
- Romanesque Churches of Vall de Boi
- Uelhs deth Joeu waterfall
- Bosque de Carlac, one of the secret Spanish hikes near the French border

Day 9 Alquezar
Before returning to Madrid, make sure to spend a day in Alquezar, one of the must-see places in the Spanish province of Huesca and one of the top gems of the Aragon autonomous community.

Besides its picture-perfect streets, this small town is known for one of the top Spanish hikes – Pasarelas del Vero (also called Pasarelas de Alquezar). This route was one of the highlights of my Aragon road trip and weekend in Sierra de Guara. It is so unique since this hike takes you from the heart of the small town to the stunning gorge along the metal walkways. You can check the details of the trail on the official web (the entrance cost is 4 euros per person and you can either purchase it online or at the local Tourist Office).
Day 10 – Return to Madrid
On the road from Alquezar back to Madrid, you can make a stop in Zaragoza to visit Basilica del Pilar, one of the most famous Spanish cathedrals, or Belchite, one of the most mysterious and haunted places in Spain.
To visit Belchite, the only option is a guided day or a night tour, which is usually in Spanish (but you can reach out to the Tourist office at turismo@belchite.es to ask whether they have something available in English during your travel dates).
