2 Weeks Pyrenees Itinerary for Nature Lovers in Spain

Planning a road trip in the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees is a stunning mountain range that forms a natural border between Spain and France, stretching over 430 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The most unique natural wonders of the Spanish Pyrenees are spread across three main regions – Catalonia, Aragon, and Navarra – all of which are included in this complete itinerary.

The Pyrenees is one of my favorite regions to visit in Spain, and I return every year to explore more. So, you can already find numerous itineraries on the blog under #Pyrenees – ranging from a simple weekend getaway to a 10-day trip. However, many readers have asked me for a longer route across this mountain range, as travelers from the US or Australia typically don’t visit Spain just for a short weekend and always want to make the most of their time on the Iberian Peninsula.

Therefore, I’ve put together this 2-week road trip through the Spanish Pyrenees, allowing anyone to visit most of the region’s highlights in one trip. This itinerary is designed for nature lovers seeking an unplugged vacation while exploring some of Spain’s lushest regions, including a few of the country’s most iconic hikes and national parks.

Where to Start this Pyrenees Itinerary

You can start this Pyrenees itinerary from either Barcelona or Madrid, as shown on the map below. If you plan to return to the same city after exploring the Pyrenees, the direct road trip from Barcelona to Madrid typically takes around 6 hours. All potential stops along the way are covered in detail in this post.

A Complete 2 Weeks Pyrenees Itinerary

Day 1-2 From Barcelona to La Garrotxa

How to spend 2 days in La Garrotxa

Barcelona is a great city to begin this Pyrenees itinerary as it receives the largest number of international flights. If you’re considering exploring Barcelona before heading to the mountains, here’s my ultimate itinerary for the city.

The first beautiful setting I recommend visiting on the way to the Pyrenees is La Garrotxa, a popular weekend break from Barcelona. This region is located in Girona (northeastern Spain), and is renowned for its striking volcanic landscape, with more than 40 extinct volcanoes. The Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park offers a fantastic mix of lush forests, volcanic rocky soils, and scenic hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the area’s unique geology.

I suggest spending at least two days in the La Garrotxa area, checking out two main hikes: Gorg de Molí dels Murris and Fageda d’en Jordà, while also exploring Lake Banyoles and Les Estunes (where, according to Spanish legends, the Catalan fairies live). On one of my recent Pyrenees road trips, I unexpectedly stumbled upon a local museum of erotic sculpture Bosc de Can Ginebreda – definitely the last thing you’d expect to see while driving to the Pyrenees! On that trip, I was traveling with kids, so it wasn’t the right time to visit lol, but I’ll share my thoughts on it once I check it out.

For a memorable experience in La Garrotxa, hot air balloon flights over the volcanic landscapes are popular. After hiking during the day, you can visit the Volcanology Center in Olot and explore local small towns like Santa Pau, Sant Joan les Fonts, and Sant Feliu de Pallerols in the evenings.

Bucket-list hikes in La Garrotxa: Gorg de Molí dels Murris and Fageda d’en Jordà.

Where to stay in La Garrotxa: Hotel Mas la Ferreria, ECOTurisme Can Buch, or Hotel Rural & Spa Mas Prat

Optional – Andorra

In case you are considering staying in the Spanish Pyrenees for more than two weeks, you could also add a few days in Andorra at this point in the itinerary. Andorra is one of the smallest states in Europe. You can check out my tips and itineraries under the hashtag #Andorra.

Day 3-6 Vall d’Aran (Pyrenees of Catalonia)

How to spend 4 days in Vall d’Aran

After exploring La Garrotxa, head to Vielha, another popular destination in the Pyrenees of Catalonia. It is the main town of Vall d’Aran, a picturesque valley known for its unique cultural heritage. The locals speak Aranese, and their traditions reflect a blend of Catalan and French influences. Don’t worry, though – everyone understands Spanish, and many also speak some English, as the area grows in popularity among international visitors.

In winter, Vall d’Aran is famous for its ski resort, Baqueira Beret. However, in summer, it’s also a great base for exploring three stunning natural destinations in the Pyrenees: Vall d’Aran, Congost de Mont-Rebei, and Aigüestortes National Park.

In the evenings after hiking, you can visit the unique Romanesque churches of Vall de Boí. You can read more about my detailed weekend in the area in this post and find out how to visit Congost de Mont-Rebei in this article.

Bucket-list hikes near Vall d’Aran: Ruta del Planell de Aiguestortes y Estany Llong, Uelhs deth Joeu, Bosque de Carlac, and Congost de Mont-Rebei.

Day 7-9 Ainsa (Pyrenees of Aragon)

How to spend 3 days in Ainsa

After exploring the Pyrenees of Catalonia, drive to Ainsa (or Boltana), located in the Pyrenees of Aragon. The town of Ainsa is often regarded as one of the most charming towns in the Pyrenees, as well as one of the top medieval villages in Spain. Right next to it is the village of Boltana, known for its excellent spa hotel, Barceló Monasterio de Boltana. Both Ainsa and Boltana are perfect for spending a few days in this area of the Pyrenees. You can read more about my adventures in this post, and find my full Ordesa Hiking guide here.

In my opinion, the top hiking trails to explore in this area are Ruta por el Cañón de Añisclo, 7 Ibones de Astún, Cola de Caballo, and Llanos de La Larri. Most of these will take the better part of the day, except for Ruta por el Cañón de Añisclo, which is a short walk (though there are additional trails you can take to extend it). You can easily visit it in the afternoon after completing one of the other three hikes I recommend.

Optional – Sierra y Cañones de Guara

At this point in the itinerary, you can also add a few days in the Pre-Pyrenees of Spain to explore the beautiful Sierra y Cañones de Guara park. The must-do hike is Pasarelas del Vero, but you can discover more options in this area in this post.

Bucket-list hikes near Ainsa: Ruta por el Cañon de Añisclo, 7 Ibones de Astun, Cola de Caballo, Pasarelas del Vero, and Llanos de La Larri.

Day 10-11 Panticosa (Pyrenees of Aragon)

How to spend 2 days in Panticosa

Relocating to Panticosa is actually optional, as it is still located in the Pyrenees of Aragon. If you prefer not to relocate, you can also stay for these 2 days in Ainsa or Boltana.

However, there are a few unique hiking areas that would be easier to enjoy if based in Panticosa, like Valle de La Ripera, which can only be accessed by a tourist train from Panticosa (since the valley is closed to private vehicles). Another great spot where many unique trails start is Telecabina Formigal Panticosa, a ski lift open year-round. You can take it all the way up and spend the day exploring local glacier lakes.

Panticosa also has a spa, which is a bit old, but to my surprise, I really enjoyed it when I visited this summer. The natural surroundings are magical, and the spa itself wasn’t as crowded as the famous Caldea in Andorra, making it a peaceful retreat after a day of hiking. Additionally, if you love animals, be sure to visit Lacuniacha Park, a local sanctuary where you can walk through the woods and explore its wildlife (it’s basically a hike). The nearest villages of Lanuza and Sallent de Gállego are also among the most beautiful in the entire Pyrenees mountain range. You can find even more details about this area of the Pyrenees in this article.

Bucket-list hikes near Panticosa: Valle de La Ripera via the Panticosa tourist train (Ruta al Dedo de Yenefrito or Ruta al Rincón del Verde), Ibon de Asnos via the Panticosa ski lift, Pasarelas de Panticosa, and Lacuniacha Park.

Day 12-13 Elgorriaga (Pyrenees of Navarra)

How to spend 2 days in the Pyrenees of Navarra

After catching a quick glimpse of the Aragonese Pyrenees, you can drive to the last epic region of this iconic mountain range – the Pyrenees of Navarra. On the way to the Pyrenees of Navarra, you might consider enjoying the Mallos de Riglos hike (which I mention in this Aragon itinerary). I’ve left it out of this 2-week itinerary as it’s located far from everything else in the Pyrenees, but it’s an impressive hike worth trying at least once.

The Pyrenees of Navarra is likely the greenest and lushest area of the whole mountain range, but it’s also the rainiest. So, you should wear proper hiking gear and have a plan B (just in case it rains too much). The Pyrenees of Navarra are located less than an hour from San Sebastian, so I recommend saving this 3-day San Sebastian itinerary, in case the weather lets you down. Nevertheless, the Pyrenees of Navarra is an epic area to enjoy nature in Spain. Don’t miss Cascada de Xorroxin (in the small town of Erratzu) and Selva de Irati from Orbaitzeta. You can check out all of the unique trails in the area via the official website.

Bucket-list hikes in the Pyrenees of Navarra: Cascada de Xorroxin, Selva de Irati from Orbaitzeta, and the Zugarramurdi Caves.

Where to stay in the Pyrenees of Navarra: Balneario Elgorriaga or Silken Puerta de Irati

Day 14 Return to Madrid

On the way from the Pyrenees of Navarra to Madrid, you have two potential routes, depending on whether you plan to make any stops along the way. Option one is to visit Burgos, known for having one of the most stunning cathedrals in Spain. Option two is to travel via Soria, one of the most underrated Spanish towns, and visit its Laguna Negra de Urbión. You can find more details about it in this post.

Also, if you plan to stay in Madrid, you can also check out this 1-day itinerary or a weekend guide to Madrid.

What is the Lushest Part of Spain?

Northern Spain is known as the lushest part of the country, famous for its frequent rains and stunning Atlantic cliffs. If you’re seeking forests, I’d highlight the Pyrenees in Navarra, especially the Selva de Irati, which is breathtaking during fall foliage. Additionally, the national parks of Ordesa y Monte Perdido and Aigüestortes also feature beautiful forests.

Where to Find Nature in Spain

As someone who has visited every region in Spain, I can say that, in my opinion, the most beautiful natural areas can be found in the Pyrenees Mountains and Asturias. It’s no surprise that both regions are home to Spain’s first recognized national parks: Picos de Europa and Ordesa y Monte Perdido. However, I would also add Tenerife to this list, thanks to the island’s unique landscapes, especially in places like Anaga and Teide.

While the list of national parks in Spain goes beyond the places I’ve mentioned (you can check it out here), I often feel it was designed to ensure every Spanish region is recognized, which is a great way to distribute tourism across the country. However, since this blog is a personal collection of my travel experiences, I can be honest – not all Spanish national parks are equally impressive. Many were included due to their unique ecosystems or other reasons, rather than purely for their visual appeal.

Best Time to Enjoy Spanish Nature

While I usually advise against visiting Spain in the summer, for the Pyrenees, summer can actually be a great season. If you can visit in June, it’s preferable to July or August, when most people in Spain and Europe are on holiday. However, the Pyrenees don’t get as overcrowded as Barcelona or Madrid, even during peak season (though I do recommend booking accommodation in advance during that time).

My favorite times to enjoy nature and hiking in Spain are September/October and April/May. These months are still known for great weather, but with fewer people around, they offer a more magical and peaceful holiday in nature.
