Top Beautiful Small Towns in the Spanish Pyrenees
Visiting the Spanish Pyrenees
Where Spain meets France, the majestic Pyrenees mountains cradle some of the most enchanting small towns – not just in Spain, but in all of Europe. This awe-inspiring range offers an incredible variety of ecosystems, from lush green valleys and dense forests to soaring peaks and crystal-clear glacial lakes. But the Pyrenees are more than just a natural wonderland – they’re also home to ancient monasteries, hidden museums, and charming villages that feel frozen in time.
If you’ve been following the blog for a while, you already know that the Spanish Pyrenees are one of my all-time favorite destinations. You’ll find countless tips and itineraries under the hashtag #Pyrenees. This lesser-known corner of Spain is a treasure trove of dramatic landscapes, national parks, centuries-old traditions, and unspoiled beauty.
Best Villages in the Pyrenees of Spain
Ainsa
Aínsa was the very first small town I visited in the Pyrenees, and it left a lasting impression. Nestled at the foothills of the mountains, this enchanting medieval gem is one of Spain’s most atmospheric historic towns, with a beautifully preserved old quarter that feels like stepping back in time.
Though well-established on the tourist map, Aínsa still manages to retain its charm and authenticity. Conveniently located along one of the region’s main roads, it serves as a natural gateway to Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park – one of Spain’s most iconic and breathtaking protected areas.
Aínsa is also home to the acclaimed Michelin-starred Restaurante Callizo, which has come highly recommended by many of my fellow food lovers – though I’ve yet to experience it myself on my culinary journeys through Spain.
Where to stay: Alojamientos Ainsa Sanchez (or Hotel & Spa Monasterio de Boltaña near Ainsa)

Besalu
Often called one of the most charming medieval villages in all of Spain, Besalú is a must-visit gem in the heart of Catalonia. I had the chance to explore it during our Costa Brava road trip, and I was truly captivated – especially by its iconic 12th-century Romanesque bridge spanning the Fluvia River, one of the best-preserved of its kind in Europe.
Though this picturesque town attracts a fair number of visitors – as a popular road trip stop or a weekend getaway from Barcelona – its winding cobblestone streets, timeless stone architecture, and fairytale atmosphere never lose their charm. Besalú is a place where history and beauty intertwine effortlessly.
Where to stay: Els Jardins De La Martana

Torla-Ordesa
Torla-Ordesa is a hidden gem nestled at the doorstep of one of Spain’s most iconic national parks – Ordesa y Monte Perdido. I stumbled upon this charming village during my most recent Pyrenees road trip, and it instantly became one of the highlights. Surrounded by towering cliffs, lush forests, and crystal-clear rivers, Torla-Ordesa is an ideal mountain retreat for outdoor lovers. It also serves as the main gateway to the park, with shuttle buses departing from the village, since private vehicles are not permitted within the protected area.
The village itself is a picturesque blend of stone houses, winding alleys, and timeless rural charm. For anyone seeking both adventure and tranquility in the heart of the Pyrenees, Torla-Ordesa is an unforgettable stop.
Where to stay: Silken Ordesa

Taull
Taüll is a picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Vall de Boí, a region in the Catalan Pyrenees renowned worldwide for its exceptional Romanesque architecture. This charming mountain village is home to the iconic Church of Sant Climent de Taüll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most celebrated examples of Romanesque art in Europe. I fell in love with Taüll during an adventurous weekend in the Pyrenees – especially the immersive light show inside the church, which brought its ancient frescoes to life in the most magical way.
Framed by majestic peaks and peaceful alpine meadows, Taüll offers a serene escape into nature, with easy access to Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park – one of Spain’s most stunning protected areas. While the park’s official mini-bus departs from the nearby village of Boí, Taüll is the perfect base for exploring the region’s natural and cultural wonders.
Where to stay: Alberg Taull

Sallent de Gallego
Sallent de Gállego was one of the most delightful surprises of my recent family trip to the Aragonese Pyrenees. Since we were traveling with my senior in-laws, hiking wasn’t on the agenda, so we focused on discovering new villages – and stumbled upon this charming gem entirely by chance during a lunch stop. To my surprise, Sallent de Gállego quickly became one of my personal favorites in the Spanish Pyrenees.
Nestled near the French border and surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, the village is best known for hosting the Pirineos Sur Festival, an internationally renowned celebration of world music. Yet beyond the festival, Sallent offers so much more: cobbled streets lined with traditional stone houses, panoramic views at every turn, and an impressive selection of cozy, high-quality restaurants that far exceeded our expectations. On my next visit to the Pyrenees, I’ll make sure to stay here.
Where to stay: Apartahotel Tres Quiñones or Casa Sallent

Lanuza
Lanuza is one of those hidden gems that has recently captured the imagination of travelers across Spain – thanks in part to several popular travel publications dubbing it “the town from Frozen.” With its snow-capped peaks, turquoise reservoir, and fairytale-like charm, it’s easy to see why so many were reminded of the magical kingdom of Arendelle. Whether or not you’re a Disney fan, Lanuza’s setting is undeniably breathtaking.
Sadly, we didn’t get the chance to wander its medieval streets during our last visit to the Pyrenees in July, as our trip coincided with the Pirineos Sur Festival. Much to our disappointment, the village was closed to private vehicles during the event. Still, Lanuza left a lasting impression, and I’m already looking forward to returning the kids to fully experience the magic of this storybook village.
Where to stay: Hotel La Casueña

Where to stay in the Pyrenees
Charming local villages are perfect for enjoying a serene mountain getaway all year round. During my first visit to the Pyrenees, we stayed at Barceló Monasterio de Boltaña. It´s one of the best hotels with SPA in the Pyrenees, with spacious rooms and quite decent prices (considering the quality of the services). While exploring the Pyrenees of Catalonia we stayed at the budget-friendly Apartamentos Chuandervera in the small town of Laspaules.
Also, you can find a few cute boutique hotels in Ainsa, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Spain, like Alojamientos Ainsa Sanchez and Los Siete Reyes. I also love these hotels – Hotel Boutique Mediodía & Apartments, Casa Lascorz, and Casa de San Martín.
