Top 13 Natural Wonders in Spain (2025)

Unique Landscapes in Spain

While Spain is mostly known worldwide as a top holiday destination with amazing beaches and great sights, I can assure you that nature lovers might be unexpectedly spoiled for choice while visiting the Iberian Peninsula. The flat plains of Central Spain transform into magical forests and the adventurous Pyrenees as you head north, or shift into chilly palms and white sands as you move south. But the most unexpected thing about Spain’s diverse landscapes is that the country is full of places that seem like they’re from another planet. Pink and green lakes, vast deserts, steaming volcanoes, ancient trees, and peculiar rock formations – there’s no shortage of natural wonders to explore in Spain. So, in addition to my posts Fairytale Places, Dreamy Spanish Castles, and Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Spain (all filled with fantasy places), I’ve curated for you a full list of otherworldly landscapes in Spain. Let’s experience unique sceneries that represent the country’s biggest natural wonders.

Top Natural Wonders in Spain

1. Las Tabernas Desert in Almeria

Did you know that many of the top Hollywood Westerns were actually filmed in Spain? The Tabernas Desert is Andalusia’s iconic Wild West. You might have already seen a glimpse of Almeria’s wide and dry expanses when I shared the Game of Thrones filming locations in Spain and the Almeria Holiday Guide. This is where Game of Thrones Season 6 scenes depicting the land of the Dothraki were filmed. Moreover, Almeria is the only place in Europe where you can channel your inner cowboy while walking the streets of a Wild West town. Almeria’s desert is one of the most unique landscapes in Spain – no wonder it has a long history with international filmmakers. To name a few top movies featuring the Tabernas Desert: Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Cleopatra (1963), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly(1966), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Dance of the Vampires (2001), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014).

2. The Enchanted City of Cuenca

When it comes to unique rock formations, the Enchanted City of Cuenca is one of the top Spanish natural wonders, full of rocks that look out of this world. Located 28 km from the city of Cuenca in central Spain, the Enchanted City is a must-see on any Madrid to Valencia road trip, as it is truly a natural phenomenon. You can read more about my visit here.

3. Teide National Park in Tenerife

While you can currently travel to the moon virtually, the Canary Islands might give you a similar experience in real life. The impressive and unique landscapes of these exotic Spanish islands deserve a separate post. But one place that pops into my mind first is Teide National Park in Tenerife, home to Spain’s highest mountain, Teide (over 3,700 m). It is one of the top Spanish landmarks to visit at least once in a lifetime. Another similar location in the Canary Islands is Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park. Both Teide and Timanfaya National Parks have volcanic origins and will amaze you with their surreal, lunar landscapes.

4. Europe’s Highest Cliffs in Galicia

While there are many beautiful cliffs in Spain, the region of Galicia in Northern Spain is known for having the highest cliffs in Europe. For instance, Finisterre coast feels magical – Romans called it “finis terrae” (which means “end of the earth”) because, back then, the west coast of Galicia was where the known world literally ended for them. Check out this post for more dramatic cliff landscapes in Spain.

5. Millenary Olive Trees

Another unique Spanish natural wonder that no one talks about is the Millenary Olive Trees across the Mediterranean. Some of these ancient giants in the small, off-the-beaten-path village of Canet Lo Roig in Castellon are over 2,000 years old and have been in the region since the times of the Roman Empire. A walk through a 200-year-old olive grove is quite an experience in itself. In addition, some local shops offer bottles of local millenary olive oil as a food souvenir from Spain. The Route of the Millenary Olive Trees is one of the Valencia Region’s hidden gems and one of the coolest hikes in Castellon. You can read more about my visit in this post.

6. Sand Dunes in Fuerteventura

Aside from my favorite Tarifa, there’s another epic natural setting in Spain where the endless sand dunes do not align with what any visitor might expect from Spain – Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo in Fuerteventura, one of the top Spanish islands. Technically, the Canary Islands are much closer to Africa than they are to Europe. However, despite the popular belief that all this sand was blown from the Sahara Desert, Fuerteventura’s sand dunes were actually composed of local shells. It is one of the most stunning Spanish natural wonders, with an unmatched otherworldly feel.

7. Enchanted Forest of Anaga

One of my favorite Spanish natural wonders is Parque Rural de Anaga in Tenerife. While we all love walks in nature, some places make us feel the magic flowing through our system more than others. Some forests in Spain will make you wonder if enchanted forests really exist. Sendero El Bosque Encantado is one of the most epic Spanish hikes, located within Anaga Rural Park (it’s the most iconic one, but there are many more trails available in the area). Plus, Anaga is one of the many Spanish enchanted forests – you can check out my full list in this post.

8. Green Lake in Lanzarote

While there are many beautiful and unique lakes in Spain, Lago de los Clicos (also Charco de los Clicos) feels especially unique due to its green color. This lake in Lanzarote was formed in the crater of an old volcano and owes its spectacular color to the type of algae that grows there. The lake is still connected to the ocean via underground channels, which helps maintain the water level.

9. Caribbean Blues in Formentera

It’s hard to beat the island of Formentera when it comes to Caribbean-like beaches in Europe. While the Mediterranean has quite a few turquoise water spots, like the Blue Lagoon of Cyprus or trendy Ibiza beaches, the paradise coastlines in Spain are led by the island of Formentera. Check out more details about my recent magical weekend in Formentera in this post.

10. Pink Lake of Alicante

One of the most unexpected natural settings in Spain is Alicante’s Pink Lake, also called Las Salinas de Torrevieja. Its amazing color is created by bacteria and algae. Although the exact hue of the lake highly depends on the season and time of day – in real life, it’s not always as brightly pink as you might see on social media – yet, it remains an impressive natural wonder. Moreover, while many claim you can swim in Alicante’s Pink Lake: during my visit in April, there were a few government officials patrolling and asking people not to touch the water. Due to its unique flora and fauna, Torrevieja Natural Park is visited by flamingos during the breeding season – so it is also a great place for birdwatching in Spain.

11. Palm Grove in Elche

The largest palm grove in Europe is located in the small Spanish town of Elche, in Valencia Province. With 200,000 palms, El Palmeral has been a part of Elche’s unique urban landscape for over 1,000 years. The origins of the Palm Grove of Elche date back to the 10th century when the Arabs relocated the city to its current site. You can read more about Elche and its palms in this post.

12. The Zumaia Beach in The Basque Country

Zumaya Beach is one of the most unique natural wonders of the Basque Country, known for a series of strata formations that rise vertically from the sea, creating an otherworldly effect. Typically, layered rocks form when particles settle from water or air. Zumaia Beach was also one of the most unique Game of Thrones filming locations in Spain.

13. The Pyrenees

The Pyrenees is a mountain range nestled along the Spain-France border. It is one of the most beautiful regions on the Iberian Peninsula, full of stunning mountain landscapes, glacier lakes, waterfalls, and lush greenery. On the Spanish side, it houses two of the most unique national parks in the country: Ordesa y Monte Perdido and Aigüestortes. Since the Pyrenees is one of my all-time favorite destinations, I visit this mountain range often. You can check out all of my tips and itineraries for the Pyrenees here.
