While everyone mentions Barcelona or Granada’s Alhambra as the most romantic places in Spain, both are known for their magical architecture yet are also top tourist destinations on any Spain bucket list. While visiting these in the off-season might provide some romantic vibes, I would suggest Seville (but not in summer) and San Sebastian (in summer, as it usually rains a lot) as some of the most romantic places in Spain. While both are well-established on the tourist track, they don’t get nearly as crowded as Barcelona or Granada’s Alhambra.

Where to go for a romantic getaway in Spain?

Romantic getaway ideas in Spain may vary greatly depending on the season. In summer, it could be the Caribbean-like island of Formentera, known for Spain’s most unique beaches, or San Sebastian in Northern Spain, often called Spain’s most picturesque town. If searching for winter sun, the Canary Islands could be one of the greatest honeymoon destinations during the colder months. Visiting Barcelona or Madrid is a great idea for artsy couples. Seville and Granda are stunning, except for the summer months. Also, staying in one of the dreamy Spanish castles or ancient and secret monasteries could be the perfect lovey-dovey plan all year round.

To awaken your inner romantic, check out these top romantic legends from Spain and romantic songs. When the time comes to get away from your daily life with that special someone, think of all the romantic Spanish travel experiences you can share with your media naranja (this is how you refer to your significant other in Spanish).

Let me show you that Spain is an epic destination for couples, with plenty of options to suit all tastes and preferences. Below, you’ll find some of my favorite destinations for planning a romantic getaway in Spain.

1. The Caribbean-like beaches in Formentera

If there’s one place in Spain made for romance, it’s Formentera, one of the best Spanish islands. There’s honestly no better place to celebrate love than this Caribbean-like island. Formentera is similar to the magical blue lagoon in Cyprus, but much more private. The island has a limited number of hotels and fewer than 10,000 residents.

Formentera can be reached by ferry from Ibiza (and also from Valencia/Denia during the summer months). This is where celebrities and soccer players go to hide away from the rest of the world, although they often rent boats to make it even more private. 2. The Andalusian charm of Seville

What is the one city in Spain with such undeniable charm that you might end up falling in love with Spain and your long-time partner all over again? For me, it’s Seville! I know many might prefer Barcelona or Granada’s Alhambra, but Seville has a unique feel that’s often associated with rekindling passion for life.

The city’s Moorish walls, Roman ruins, Baroque churches, Renaissance architecture, orange-tree-lined plazas, tiled patios, delicious tapas, lively fiestas, and the magic of flamenco all come together to create a truly enchanting atmosphere. There are so many reasons to visit Seville.

All the famous things that make Spain globally renowned can be found in Seville. Whether you’re watching the sunset at the famous Plaza de España, strolling along the Guadalquivir River, or sipping a cocktail at one of the local rooftop bars, everything about Seville has a romantic twist. There’s even a famous Spanish song, “Sevilla tiene un color especial” (Seville has a special color) by Los del Río, where the band highlights the city’s unique charm, and I couldn’t agree more with those words. 3. A getaway in the Spanish Pyrenees

Active couples and travelers with an eye for stunning natural wonders should not miss the Spanish Pyrenees, one of my all-time favorite destinations. In winter, you can plan a ski getaway to Baqueira Beret or visit Andorra, one of Europe’s smallest countries. In summer, enjoy hiking or road-tripping through the region. The Pyrenees are home to some of Spain’s most iconic national parks and lakes, making it hard to imagine a better view to wake up to. Additionally, you can find great spas in the area, such as the Monasterio Boltaña or Caldea in Andorra.

One of the top things Spain is known for internationally is Rioja wine. The region spans over 41,505 hectares of vineyards and is home to around 600 bodegas. There’s no better romantic getaway in Spain than by roaming together from vineyard to vineyard in search of your perfect sip. In Rioja, you’ll be surrounded by magical scenery, which may slightly remind you of Italy’s Tuscany.

For a break from wine tasting, you can visit the small towns of Logroño or Haro to explore old architecture and enjoy excellent tapas. Spain’s Basque Country is one of the best dining destinations in the world, with 40 Michelin-starred restaurants spread across just 21,000 square kilometers, and San Sebastian is one of the most beautiful places in Spain. The city’s culinary obsession revolves around its famous pintxos, a variety of diverse mini-bites laid out for you to choose from. Beyond its incredible food scene, San Sebastian is undeniably beautiful. What could be more romantic than a long stroll along the Bay of Concha, surrounded by scenic mountains and rolling waves?

The atmospheric Old Town, with its charming cobblestone streets and excellent pintxo bars add to the experince. The panoramic views of San Sebastian from Monte Igeldo, Monte Urgull, and Monte Ulia are also breathtaking. 6. Tarifa beach getaway

Tarifa is one of the biggest gems in Southern Spain. This small town sits at the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, offering views of Morocco fading behind the skyline. In the summer, it is known for some of the most stunning beaches in Spain and offers plenty of adventurous activities, like whale watching and kitesurfing.

The best time to visit Spain for a romantic getaway depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for. Late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are ideal, with pleasant temperatures ranging from 18–28°C (64–82°F) and fewer crowds – perfect for strolling through historic cities, exploring charming villages, or enjoying outdoor cafés.

Summer (July to August) is known for its lively coastal towns along the Mediterranean, where temperatures can soar to 30–38°C (86–100°F). However, if you prefer to avoid the peak tourist crowds and extreme heat, northern Spain is a fantastic summer alternative. While cities like San Sebastian and Bilbao are well-known, much of the north remains under the radar for international travelers, offering cooler weather and a more laid-back vibe.

Winter (December to February) can still be a lovely time to visit, especially for a city break along Spain’s Mediterranean coast – destinations like Valencia, Alicante, or Malaga enjoy plenty of winter sun with daytime temperatures around 15–20°C (59–68°F). However, in central and northern Spain, winter tends to be colder and rainier than many expect, with temperatures often dropping to 5–10°C (41–50°F). If you’re seeking warmth and sunshine, these regions might not be the best choice during the colder months.

During any season in Spain, there are numerous vibrant festivals and medieval fairs across the country, perfect if you’re looking for a more social and energetic atmosphere.
