How to pack for Spain?

Whether you’re hopping between the Spanish islands, exploring the city lights of Madrid, or hiking in the Pyrenees, having the right essentials in your suitcase can make all the difference. As someone who has visited every region in Spain, I’ve discovered must-have items that never let me down, along with a few overlooked essentials that proved invaluable. In this guide, you’ll find my must-haves from decades of personal experience, ensuring you pack not only what you need but also what you didn’t realize you’d want.

I hope this A to Z Spain summer packing list helps make your vacation as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Let’s ensure your suitcase is packed with everything you need for an amazing Spanish adventure!

What to wear in Spain in Summer

Spain is globally famous for its summer heat, especially in popular destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, Mallorca, Costa Brava, and Southern Spain. It’s absolutely true that these locations can get very hot in the summer. Here are the average summer temperatures for each:

• Barcelona: Around 28°C (82°F)
• Madrid: Around 32°C (90°F)
• Seville: Around 36°C (97°F)
• Mallorca: Around 30°C (86°F)
• Costa Brava: Around 29°C (84°F)
• Costa del Sol: Around 31°C (88°F)

However, keep in mind that there are many Spanish destinations with moderate temperatures and rainy weather even during the peak summer season, such as the Pyrenees or Northern Spain. Average temperatures in Northern Spain, for example, are around 22°C (72°F) in the summer. So, if you plan a long road trip across the whole of Spain, it would be wise to bring layers to adapt to different climates. A to Z Packing List for Spain

A is for Adapter

Spain uses Type F outlets, so bring a universal power adapter if your plugs are different. This Ceptics Travel Adapter is a handy tool for European trips, meaning if your holidays in Spain include a visit to neighboring countries, you’re all set with just this one.

B is for Beachwear

Spain boasts some of the best beaches in Europe, especially along the Costa Brava, Costa Blanca, and the Balearic Islands. So, no Spain summer packing list is complete without beachwear. Don’t forget your swimsuits, sunglasses, and flip-flops for those sunny days in the Mediterranean! Even if you are planning a Northern Spain road trip, on a sunny day local beaches are stunning as well (even though the waters of the Atlantic are quite chilly).

C is for Comfortable Shoes

Whether you’re exploring the streets of Barcelona, hiking in the Pyrenees, or wandering through historic towns like Seville and Cordoba, you’ll want to wear comfortable walking shoes. Opt for Tevas, Sketchers, Adidas Ultraboost, or Nike Pegasus.

D is for Documents

I always recommend keeping copies of important documents or digital backups of your passport, tickets, and reservations. In major Spanish cities like Barcelona and Madrid, pickpocketing is common, so it’s essential to take extra precautions. Investing in anti-theft gear like a shoulder bag, crossbody belt bag, or travel money belt can help keep your valuables safe. As I mentioned in my Costa Brava post, friends of mine were recently robbed, and I had to accompany them to the police. Fortunately, I was there to assist, but they were completely unprepared for the situation, which could have been avoided with better precautions.

E is for eSim Card

Stay connected during your trip to Spain by getting an eSim. Using an eSIM for travel is an incredibly convenient option for staying connected on the go. Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIMs don’t require you to physically swap out cards when you move between countries, allowing for easy activation and use right from your smartphone. As incredibly as it seems while being based in Europe, and having no roaming, I have recently used a Saily eSim during the day in Andorra (since it is not part of the EU, despite being set in the Pyrenees between Spain and France).

F is for First Aid Kit

A mini first aid kit is a must-have when visiting a new country. I learned this the hard way during a layover in Istanbul when I had an unexpected and severe headache. It was late at night, and despite asking at the hotel reception, they didn’t have anything (or didn’t want to give me anything, who knows, lol). The hotel was also located outside the city center, and I had a shuttle bus arriving in just 5 hours. I didn’t want to risk venturing out to find a pharmacy in the middle of the night and potentially miss the shuttle, not to mention the safety concerns.

Since that experience, I always packed a little bit of everything: band-aids (for blisters, cuts, and scrapes), painkillers, motion sickness pills (especially for boat rides), cold medicine, and Tiger Balm (for muscle aches).

G is for Guidebook

Whether you prefer a physical guidebook or travel apps like Google Maps, be sure to have some reference materials to help you navigate the cities and discover local attractions in Spain. Additionally, organizing your trip details with a travel planner is incredibly useful to ensure you don’t miss out on any of the experiences you’ve been looking forward to.

H is for Hat

Spain is renowned as one of the sunniest destinations in Europe, which makes it ideal for winter sun. However, the summer months can be extremely intense. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat or a baseball cap will help keep you cool and protect your skin from sunburn. A hat clip is also really handy.

I is for Insect repellent

Especially if you’re visiting the countryside or plan to hike, insect repellent is a must. You don’t want to spend your vacation shopping for mosquito spray, so get some before you leave home. You’ll encounter mosquitoes in rural areas of Spain – maybe not as many as in Mexico, but still noticeable. Also, get relief for bug bites along with mosquito repellent, just in case.

J is for Jacket

Depending on the area of Spain you are visiting and the season, you might need a light jacket or cardigan / poncho-cape for layering. Especially, the Mediterranean coast can feel slightly chilly if you encounter a windy or rainy day. In Northern Spain, you’ll want something waterproof and warm all year round. My trip to Asturias took place in July, and you won’t find a picture of me without a jacket on.

K is for Kindle

A Kindle e-reader is an excellent travel companion, allowing you to carry multiple books without the bulk, making it perfect for reading during long flights or train rides. When traveling to Spain, consider choosing one of the contemporary Spanish novels to enhance your cultural experience. L for Luggage

Having a good suitcase is essential for any traveler, as it can significantly enhance the convenience and comfort of your journey. A reliable suitcase provides ample space for your belongings, protects them from damage, and makes it easier to navigate airports and train stations. You’ll likely use your phone for directions, taking pictures, and staying connected, so bringing a power bank is a smart choice to ensure it doesn’t run out of battery while you’re out exploring.

N is for Neck Pillow

If you’re flying into Spain or taking long train rides between cities, a travel neck pillow can significantly enhance your comfort during the journey. It provides support for your neck and head, reducing strain on your neck muscles. This support is especially important during long flights or car rides, where poor posture can lead to discomfort or pain.

O is for Organized toiletries

I always keep my cosmetics and toiletries organized in a waterproof toiletries bag. Hanging and transparent toiletry bags are game changers on the road, allowing you to easily see and access your items. At first glance, packing cubes might seem like an extra, but full-time travelers know they are absolute game changers. With packing cubes, suitcase chaos transforms into a neatly curated space. Whether you’re sorting by complete outfits or categorizing by clothing type (one cube for tops, another for bottoms, underwear, etc). So, it helps streamline any packing process, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging through your entire suitcase.

Spain can get quite hot, making it essential to stay hydrated. It’s a good idea to carry a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day to save money and help the environment. A collapsible water bottle is the most convenient option for on-the-go hydration. However, I must admit that I have a fondness for glass bottles and try to bring one with me whenever I can. I also love having electrolytes and vitamin C for hydration and overall wellness.

S is for Sunscreen

The Spanish sun can be fierce, especially during the summer months. Protect your skin by bringing sunscreen with high SPF. Don’t forget lip balm with SPF, too.

T is for Travel Insurance

To stay dry during surprise showers, it’s wise to carry a small, packable umbrella.

V is for Versatile Scarf

A versatile scarf is an indispensable travel accessory for several compelling reasons. First, it serves multiple functions: you can use it as a stylish wrap, a light blanket, a head covering for sun protection, or even a beach cover-up, making it adaptable for various climates and occasions.

When visiting different religious landmarks, having a scarf can be very useful – I learned this the hard way. I was once denied access to a church in Savona, Italy, because my shoulders were uncovered. Now, I always bring a scarf just in case. Although I’ve never had any issues with the dress code when visiting Spanish cathedrals, I still carry a scarf, just in case – you never know.

W is for Water Shoes and Waterproof Phone Case

If you’re planning to visit rocky beaches or go paddle-boarding in the Mediterranean, water shoes can protect your feet and provide a better grip. Additionally, a waterproof phone case is essential for Spanish beaches and adventurous activities, like kayaking.

X is for eXtra Memory Card

I always take tons of pictures on the go, from iconic Spanish landmarks to breathtakingly beautiful landscapes. So, if thats your case, make sure you have an extra memory card for your camera or phone to capture all your memories.

Y is for Yoga Mat for Travel

Even if you are not planning to visit one of the Spanish yoga retreats, having a travel-sized yoga mat is fantastic for stretching out after a long day of walking or hiking. Yoga practice has been one of my self-care essentials for years, and stretching always helps me achieve better sleep while on the go.

Z is for Ziplock Bags

Pack a few ziplock bags to protect your electronics from sand and water at the beach, or maintain the freshness of your snacks. You might be surprised at how useful these bags can be while traveling. They are perfect for carrying snacks, safeguarding your devices from moisture, or isolating a wet swimsuit from your other belongings.
