Secret Religious Sites in Spain You Can’t Miss
Best Cathedrals, Monasteries, and Churches in Spain
This is my ultimate list of hidden churches in Spain that most travelers overlook, but I’ve found truly spectacular. After the incredible response to my Instagram reel on secret churches, along with my blog posts on hidden monasteries and Spain’s most beautiful cathedrals, I decided to start keeping track of all the lesser-known churches I’ve discovered during years of nonstop road trips across the country.
As a nation shaped by powerful kingdoms and later unified under the Catholic Monarchs, Spain is home to some of the most extraordinary religious sites in Europe – architectural masterpieces that often feel like museums in their own right.
8 Epic Hidden Churches in Spain
This list brings together my personal favorites, based on more than 15 years of exploring Spain, along with helpful tips on how to include each of them in your itinerary without the stress of planning. Many of these hidden churches have an almost otherworldly atmosphere, preserved as ancient places of worship far from the typical tourist trail. If you enjoy discovering Spain’s hidden gems, these stunning secret churches deserve a spot on your Spain bucket list.
The Romanesque Churches of the Vall de Boí
In the Catalan Pyrenees, the Romanesque Churches of the Vall de Boí form one of the most remarkable collections of Romanesque churches in Europe. While they are better known among Spaniards, they remain surprisingly underrated compared to how spectacular they are.
These UNESCO-listed churches are set among breathtaking mountain landscapes, and several are truly spectacular. Taüll Church features a beautiful light show, Boí Church is known for its unique mural paintings, and Erill la Vall offers access to its ancient tower, which you can climb for stunning panoramic views. You can visit them on this 3-day Catalan Pyrenees itinerary or include them as part of a road trip from Barcelona.

Iglesia del Socors
One of the most atmospheric churches in the Balearic Islands is Iglesia del Socors in Menorca, a peaceful historic church tucked away in a setting full of Mediterranean charm and centuries of history. Entry to the church is included with a ticket to the nearby Cathedral of Menorca, often considered one of the most unique cathedrals in Spain. You can read more in my Menorca bucket list or visit it during this 3-day Menorca itinerary.

Ermitas de Tella
For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, the Ermitas de Tella in the Pyrenees offer a magical setting of tiny mountain hermitages surrounded by forests and stunning mountain views. This area is not only rich in medieval history but is also often mentioned among the more mysterious places in Spain, as it has long been associated with stories of witchcraft.
While the route to the hermitages is often described as a hike, it’s actually a pleasant walk from the village of Tella to visit all of these ancient churches. You can visit them on this 5-day Pyrenees itinerary.

Ermitas de San Baudelio & San Saturio
Ermita de San Baudelio is one of the most unique churches in Spain, known for its rare pre-Romanesque architecture and beautiful Mozarabic elements. Another secret church in the same region is Ermita de San Saturio, dramatically built into the rock above the Duero River. You can read more about my visit to both churches in this Soria road trip itinerary.

Santuario de la Cueva Santa
In the Valencian Community, the Santuario de la Cueva Santa in Altura is a fascinating sanctuary built around sacred caves, blending spirituality, nature, and centuries of pilgrimage history. It remains one of the lesser-known hidden gems of the Valencia region, and you can easily combine it with many hikes in Valencia or Castellón, as it’s located right on the border between the two provinces.

Santuario de la Virgen de la Balma
The Santuario de la Virgen de la Balma is truly extraordinary, dramatically built into the rock face of a mountain. It’s one of the most surreal and hidden religious sites in Spain. Centuries ago, it was considered an important pilgrimage destination for those believed to be possessed by the devil. It is located near the hidden village of Zorita del Maestrazgo, close to Morella, and can be visited on a Castellón or Valencia road trip, or even as a day trip from Valencia if you don’t mind a drive of more than two hours each way.

The Holy Cave of Covadonga
The Holy Cave of Covadonga (Cueva Santa) is one of Spain’s most iconic yet still deeply atmospheric pilgrimage sites, set within a dramatic cave overlooking the surrounding mountains. Located in Asturias, right near one of Spain’s most iconic national parks, Picos de Europa, this place is well known among Catholic pilgrimage sites in Europe, but many international travelers in Spain still miss it.
This is where the famous Reconquista began, when the Spanish took back the country after it was dominated by the Moors for centuries. You can learn more in my list of Spanish documentaries. The Holy Cave of Covadonga can be easily included in this Asturias road trip itinerary.

Iglesias de Cerralbo
In the Pyrenees mountains of Aragón, the lesser-known Iglesias de Cerralbo offer another glimpse into the region’s rich Romanesque heritage. These historic churches are true hidden gems compared to those in Vall de Boí, but they are remarkably unique in their own way and easy to explore on your own. You can include them in this Aragonese Pyrenees itinerary.

No matter which hidden church in Spain you choose to visit, these places reveal a different side of the country – quieter, more mysterious, and deeply rooted in history. They make perfect additions to any slow, reflective, or spiritual travel itinerary across Spain. I’ll keep updating this post with new favourites as I continue exploring hidden gems in Spain myself.
