Top Colorful Places in Spain
Visiting colorful places around the world
The impact of color on our emotions has fascinated people for years, and countless studies now confirm what many of us instinctively feel: the colors around us can significantly influence our mood. I experience this firsthand on the go – sometimes color gives me more energy than coffee. Just picture bright, sunlit yellows, lush tropical greens, deep ocean blues, and vibrant oranges. Doesn’t that alone spark a rush of endorphins? Colors have a powerful way of lifting our spirits, evoking joy, calm, or excitement depending on their shades and combinations.
When you pair this emotional power of color with the thrill of discovering new places, travel becomes even more magical. Visiting the world’s most colorful destinations awakens wanderlust, fuels curiosity, and inspires creativity. So if you’re craving a burst of inspiration, exploring Spain’s most colorful places might be the perfect antidote to routine – infusing your journey with beauty, energy, and a renewed sense of wonder.
The Most Colorful Villages in Spain
Villajoyosa in Alicante
Located just a few kilometers south of the famous Benidorm, Villajoyosa is renowned for its great beach and its vibrant, colorful fishing houses that line the seafront, creating a picturesque and inviting atmosphere. This charming town is one of the true gems of the Costa Blanca coastline, offering a more relaxed and authentic alternative to its more tourist-heavy neighbors.
Villajoyosa is a perfect destination to pick up some unique food souvenirs from Spain, as it is home to three small chocolate factories, with Valor being the most famous. Villajoyosa’s laid-back charm, cultural heritage, and local delicacies make it a popular destination of the Alicante region.

Port Saplaya near Valencia
Port Saplaya, often referred to by locals as “Valencia’s Little Venice,” is a charming coastal town known for its picturesque canals, colorful Mediterranean-style houses, and peaceful atmosphere, especially in the off-season. It offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, where you can enjoy a coffee or take a boat tour.
In addition to its tranquil setting, Port Saplaya is almost a part of Valencia, making it an ideal destination for a relaxing day trip.

Cudillero in Asturias
Cudillero is often considered one of the most picturesque fishing villages of Asturias, and it’s a must-stop on any Northern Spain road trip. It’s also one of the top places to visit in Asturias, thanks to its unique charm and beauty.
Despite its popularity with tourists, Cudillero maintains a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, tucked between dramatic cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. The village is famous for its colorful, terraced houses that seem to cascade down the hillside toward the harbor, creating a picture-perfect view.

Juzcar in Andalusia
Júzcar is one of the tiniest and most colorful villages in Spain, and a must-see stop in Southern Spain. Before 2011, Júzcar was like many other typical “white” villages in Andalusia, known for its traditional whitewashed architecture. However, everything changed when Sony Pictures launched the idea of creating “The Blue Smurfs Village” as part of their promotional campaign for The Smurfs movie. The locals embraced the project, painting their village in bright blue to match the theme.
What was initially meant to be a temporary stunt turned into the village’s iconic trademark, and today, Júzcar is a vibrant blue destination that attracts tourists from all over the world. It’s not every day you get to feel like you’re stepping into the world of the Smurfs! It is such a fun place to visit in Spain with kids. You can check out more photos in this post.

Orotava in Tenerife
There is no shortage of beautiful places on the Canary Islands, with some landscapes appearing almost otherworldly in their beauty. Tenerife, as one of the most popular Spanish islands, is known for its diverse tourist attractions, lush gardens, mysterious legends, and charming small towns.
Orotava is one of the most vibrant and colorful places on the island, particularly when the locals celebrate Corpus Christi (around May-June). During this time, the streets and the main town square are decorated with intricate carpets made from sand, flowers, and seeds. This celebration creates a stunning visual display, making Orotava a must-visit destination for a splash of colors.
However, if you’re visiting Spain in winter and your travel dates don’t coincide with Corpus Christi, you can still experience a piece of this tradition by visiting the Carpet Museum in Orotava. The museum showcases the history and artistry behind these beautiful floral carpets, making it one of Spain’s hidden gems.

Fuenterrabia in The Basque Country
One of my recent discoveries during a road trip across the Basque Country is Fuenterrabia (also called Hondarribia), one of the most colorful places in Northern Spain. It is filled with traditional Basque architecture, colorful wooden balconies, cobblestone streets, and vibrant flower pots. This hidden gem can’t be missed if you’re only staying a few days in San Sebastián.

Fanzara in Castellon
Fanzara is one of the hidden gems of the Valencia Region and a must-visit destination in the Province of Castellón. This small but vibrant town has an incredible story to tell. Once on the brink of being labeled one of “Spain’s dying villages,” Fanzara reinvented itself by transforming its streets into an open-air museum.
Today, graffiti and street art can be found on nearly every corner, giving the village a unique creative identity. You can read more about this remarkable transformation in this post. If you’re a fan of street art, Spain is also home to several other graffiti villages that function as open-air museums, including Penelles and Alfamén. You can learn more about them in this post.

Alfamen in Zaragoza
On a recent road trip from Madrid to Barcelona, I explored another secret, colorful town – Alfamen. It is located just 50 km (31 miles) from Zaragoza, making it an ideal destination for a day trip. This village is filled with stunning street art, and you can check out the full gallery from my visit in this post.

Penelles in Catalonia
During my recent weekend in Lleida, I couldn’t miss the chance to visit the vibrant local town of Penelles, full of colorful street art around every corner. You can check out the full gallery here.

What is the most colorful town in Spain?
Villajoyosa on the Costa Blanca is the most famous colorful town in Spain, known for its brightly painted seaside houses. However, Cudillero in Asturias is not far behind, with its multi-colored homes nestled into the hillside overlooking the northern coast of Spain.

Spain is at the top of my list to visit. Gosh, I just can’t get over how vibrant it is! Beautiful!
One of the many reasons I want to visit Spain is because of this: the vibrant colors of some of the villages. These are the images I see only in pictures, so to be able to witness in real life would be a check on my bucket list.
Oh my goodness, this looks like a dream getaway! Though I’ve never yet been to Spain myself, I’d love to visit one day.
Port Saplaya reminds me of Brighton Beach in Australia! I love the colored bright bath houses. So amazing!
These colors are stunning. Other countries do such a great job of incorporating colors into their everyday lives.
