Alfamen: The Spanish Street Art Village near Zaragoza

Why to love street art

It’s easy to see my admiration for international murals in my extensive Flipboard Street Art collection. That’s why I always search for new vibrant graffiti on my Spain road trips to feature them on the blog.

The Iberian Peninsula is rich with stories of how embracing street art has transformed communities and cultures. Take the captivating story of Fanzara – a village was on the brink of becoming one of Spain’s dying towns until locals invited graffiti artists to transform its streets into an open-air museum.

It’s clear that street art is more than just paint on a wall – it’s a powerful form of expression that can revitalize communities, spark conversations, and breathe new life into urban spaces. A single piece of graffiti can give a voice to the voiceless while bypassing traditional art galleries or museums that are simply out of reach for many beginner artists.

Murals can revitalize urban spaces, as these always attract tourists, photographers, and art enthusiasts.

So, I believe that by embracing street art, cities can inject fresh energy into the old neighborhoods by transforming worn-off buildings into masterpieces.

Visiting Alfamen

I was fortunate to discover Alfamen while traveling to the Pre-Pyrenees of Spain. This hidden gem is full of vibrant murals and makes for an excellent day trip from Zaragoza.

The significance of street art in Alfamen goes beyond aesthetics – many of the murals celebrate local heritage and have played a key role in revitalizing this tiny village of 1,500 residents. It all began in 2017 with the Asalto de Alfamén project, which has since grown into an annual event where international street artists come to Alfamen to create new murals.

Each mural in Alfamen is accompanied by a QR code, allowing you to learn about each artist behind each creation easily. Since Alfamen doesn’t have a tourist office, you’ll need to pick up a map of the local murals at the Zaragoza Tourist Info (or simply scan the QR code you will see in one of the photos below). If you’re visiting Spain with kids, turning the search for murals into a fun activity is a great idea.
