Best carry-on essentials on the road
Packing Tips After 15+ Years of Traveling
Whether you’re a frequent traveler or planning your first trip, having the right items in your carry-on can make all the difference in creating a smooth travel experience. Over the years, as I’ve traveled more, I’ve experimented with different essentials to create this list of my favorite carry-on must-haves.
While clean travel beauty and makeup products help me look my best on the go, there are plenty of other essentials beyond cosmetics that I always pack to prioritize my general well-being during travel. From comfort items that make long flights more bearable to practical tools that keep me organized, and mental health essentials, I’ve learned what truly makes a difference from my 15 years of packing hits and misses.
Right now, I’m packing for my solo trip to Paris, and it feels like the perfect time to share everything I never board a plane without. These travel essentials keep me comfortable, refreshed, and ready to make the most of my time abroad – whether it’s for a short getaway or an extended adventure.
The backpack I always use to pack my in-flight essentials
First of all, my favourite carry-on backpack is the Level8 Laptop Backpack. It has become my go-to option for European and international travel. While it doesn’t technically meet the strict size requirements of some budget airlines, such as Ryanair, when fully packed, the truth is that I’ve used it on Ryanair flights countless times without any issues. You can read more about its exact dimensions, the airlines I’ve travelled with while using it, and my personal tips for flying with it at the end of this post.
What I love most about this backpack is its sleek design and smart organisation. It has plenty of compartments that make packing and accessing essentials incredibly easy, while the padded back and comfortable straps make it a pleasure to carry, even on longer travel days.

My Favorite carry-on essentials for traveling
1. Travel Journal or Notebook
Having a physical notebook and pen in your carry-on is highly underrated. I used to rely too much on my memory while traveling, which led to missing out on precious moments, forgetting places I visited, and how they made me feel. The truth is, photos alone don’t always capture the essence of a journey. A travel journal is the best way to preserve memories and relive those adventures long after they’ve ended, and it’s also handy for planning your trip.
A travel journal is one of the best carry-on essentials for encouraging mindfulness on the road, allowing you to pay attention to the small details – like the people you meet or the sights, sounds, and flavors you encounter in a new place. I’m currently enjoying this Astral Travel Journal. It features a durable cover, three credit card slots, and a zippered plastic pocket for storing items like train tickets, pens, keys, money, or any other valuables. Since refills are available for this journal, I’ll be using it for a while, though I’ve also been eyeing the DUNCAN & STONE Travel Journal and the Moleskine Passion Journal.
For me, documenting experiences, thoughts, and feelings is a form of self-therapy essential on the road. While traveling, I make it a routine to write down a few memorable moments from the day (it helps me create the initial draft for the future blog posts).
These days, if not a travel journal, any similar item is a must-have for me on the go, even if it’s just a simple notebook with a few pens. I’ve been journaling for almost a year now, and I’ve noticed significant mental health benefits from it. Honestly, the smallest habits can make a big difference, and if you start journaling for just 5 minutes a day, you’ll feel the change. It could be about gratitude, emotions, impressions of new places, or anything that helps with grounding and self-expression. I also write down quotes from wanderlust books and reflect on why a particular quote resonated with me. With all the noise from social media these days, writing helps me focus, relieve stress, and gain extra clarity.
- Plan your next steps & track your progress with a Moleskine Passion Journal, with notebook designs for cooking & recipes, books & reading, traveling, wedding planning, gardening, fitness, wine, & more.
- From tracking your workout goals & plans, to a reading log, recording recipes, or planning out your perfect garden or wedding, the leather-like Moleskine cover & ivory paper pages are perfect for recording your passion.
- Moleskine planners, journals and notebooks come in hardcover or softcover and colors like black, red, blue, green and brown. The binding and cover have a durable finish, designed for daily journaling, writing and sketching.
2. Collapsible Travel Bottle or Cup
A collapsible water bottle (or cup) is an essential carry-on item for anyone aiming to stay hydrated on the go while maximizing the packing space. These are always made from lightweight, flexible materials to expand when filled and compressed into a compact size when empty. A collapsible water bottle is perfect for passing through airport security empty and filling up afterward and helps to avoid the plastic water bottles of the airport. I usually need a collapsable travel bottle or cup for electrolytes or vitamins on the go.
- Protects against 99.999999% of bacteria, microplastics, silt, sand, and cloudiness
- Enhanced micro-filter performance
- Ultra-compact, our reconfigured filter is tiny but mighty with a super packable kit that doesn’t sacrifice weight or space
- Extreme durability: 2x thicker, premium materials make it tougher and ultra leak-proof
- Highly versatile means the collapsible squeeze bottle system is designed with every occasion in mind
3. Vitamin C and Electrolites
Don’t ever underestimate the importance of proper hydration on the road. No makeup essentials can do miracles if the skin looks dehydrated and you feel off. So, for me hydrating from the inside out is essential. Electrolyte sachets do not take up carry-on space and come in really handy to enhance energy on the go. Depending on the season, I love having with me vitamin boost sachets or Ester-C sachets.

4. All-Purpose Cream
Since it is impossible to fit all of my favorite travel beauty products as carry-on essentials, multi-purpose products are life savers. Weleda Skin Food is my current favorite to use as an all-purpose remedy on the go. It is known for clean ingredients and rich texture, ideal for combating the dryness that often comes with air travel or changing climates. It works for soothing rough patches, moisturizing hands & face, while adding a healthy glow to my skin.
5. Xylitol Gum
Xylitol gums are my new favorite carry-on essentials, as the most convenient way to maintain oral hygiene on the go. After I used to wear braces and went through the teeth whitening, my gum health got worse. So, I started searching for alternatives to reduce the risk of cavities and remineralize my teeth back. I have discovered that xylitol helps neutralize acids in the mouth and promotes saliva production, which is essential when you might not have immediate access to brushing your teeth.
Additionally, it can be a great way to relieve ear pressure during flights, as the act of chewing helps to equalize the pressure in your ears.
6. Lip Balm
Burt’s Bees lip treatment is my current favorite for hydration in any climate. Made with natural ingredients like beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter, this lip balm deeply moisturizes, preventing chapping and dryness often caused by air-conditioned environments. Compact and easy to carry, Burt’s Bees lip treatment provides me with an extra touch of comfort and care. In addition, I use this Tinted Balm Formula for natural color.

7. Rosewater Spray
Using my favorite Alteya Organics Rose Water while traveling is a refreshing way to keep my skin hydrated and revitalized. Rosewater is perfect for combating the dryness and dullness that can occur during long flights. A quick spritz revitalizes tired skin, leaving it feeling fresh and rejuvenated. Its gentle, natural fragrance is an amazing way to give an enjoyable boost whenever needed.
8. Ipad and headphones
The iPad Pro with a cool keyboard case is my favorite carry-on tech item since I use it for working on the blog, watching movies, and even reading (although I prefer paper books). It is easy to fit hours’ worth of entertainment onto this slim tablet. The battery life is great, so I don’t have to worry about running out of power, even if I’m using it for the majority of the flight. In addition, a pair of wireless AirPods is always handy.
9. Portable Charger
In today’s tech-driven world, a good portable charger is such a must-have: I always bring it with me, just in case. My phone often ends up serving as a map, entertainment, and contact point, so it is hard to have it charged all day long. A portable charger ensures I can recharge my devices multiple times during long layovers or flights without a need to search for an outlet.
- only the highest-grade materials
- the market’s one and only 0.5-inch power bank that breaks the limit of 10000mAh, easily slipped into any travel lover's pockets or bag
- 3A fast charging fuels iPhone up to 78% in just one hour
- 15-Layer SmartProtect system shrugs off any unusual charging at the start
10. New Reads and AudioBooks
Bringing a paper book is my personal rule to secure a break from screens, offering a tactile and immersive way to relax and unwind during any trip. There’s something comforting about the feel of pages, which immediately makes my travels more enjoyable. My current pick is Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less – I highly recommend this life-changing book. For more inspiring reads, check out my TikTok account dedicated to all things reading and literature: @1001_books_club.
In addition, I always have with me at least one audiobook, since it is the best way to keep reading with hands and eyes free. Libro.fm is an amazing place for audiobook lovers, as it supports local bookstores by allowing you to purchase audiobooks directly through them.
- The lightest and most compact Kindle, now with a 300 ppi high-resolution display for sharp text and images.
- Read comfortably with a glare-free, paper-like display. The adjustable front light and dark mode make reading effortless, day and night.
- Get lost in your story. Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free device specifically made for reading.
- Now with extended battery life – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 6 weeks.
- Now with 16 GB to store thousands of books – Double the storage capacity of the previous generation.

11. Earplugs and Noise-Canceling Headphones
Earplugs & Noise-Canceling Headphones are great for tuning out background noise in busy airports. The hum of the airplane, crying babies, or chatty neighbors, the headphones create a peaceful bubble that lets me relax or focus on my in-flight entertainment.
12. Silk Scrunches and Hairpins
Making a hair bun with a silk scrunchie is a practical way to keep my hair neat and tangle-free while on the go. I love keeping my hair out of my face during airport security checks, long flights, and road trips. The bun helps me arrive at a new destination with smooth, crease-free hair. Plus, the luxurious feel of silk adds a touch of comfort and style. I also like these Magic Grip Hairpins and Spiral Bobby Pins.
13. Disinfecting Wipes or Spray
Traveling exposes one to endless surfaces airplane seats, hotel remotes, public transportation, and restaurant tables. So, disinfecting wipes are some of the most common carry-on essentials. These help clean and sanitize any high-touch areas, reducing the risk of illness and ensuring a safer travel experience. In addition, I love having a small Refillable Pocket Hand Sanitizer.
14. Comfort items
Comfort items like lightweight travel blanket, a neck pillow, and an eye mask are essential to have in your carry-on, especially if, like me, you struggle to sleep or relax on a plane. Additionally, packing disposable heating pads is a smart move if you tend to feel cold, as airplanes are often kept chilly.
15. Travel-Sized First Aid Kit
Bringing a Travel-Sized First Aid Kit in your carry-on is a smart and practical decision for any trip (but for me, traveling with kids, it’s something you just can’t forget). You never know when you might need a bandage for a small cut, pain relievers for a headache, or allergy medication for unexpected reactions. A compact first aid kit takes up little space but truly provides peace of mind.
16. Extra Travel Beauty Essentials
Bringing extra travel beauty essentials is always a great idea. While I’m usually too shy to use sheet masks or eye patches outside of the hotel, I love having an under-eye gel in my carry-on. It’s important to think about your skin and face conditions when packing cosmetics for the flight. For example, if you tend to have dry eyes, bringing eye drops can be really helpful. A travel-sized hand cream helps keeping your hands soft and nourished throughout your journey.
Additionally, I am a big fan of essential oils, whether it’s for sleep or light headaches: Just Plain Relief, Heavy Head Rescue, and Mental Clarity Wellness.
17. Layers
Bringing extra layers, like a lightweight cardigan or a scarf, in your carry-on is always a smart move when traveling. Airplanes, airports, and other public spaces can be unpredictable when it comes to temperature, often fluctuating between cold and warm. Having a cozy layer on hand ensures you’re comfortable throughout the flight.
18. Universal Travel Adapter
Bringing a Universal Travel Adapter in your carry-on is essential for any international trip. Since different countries use different plug types and voltage systems, having a universal adapter ensures you can charge your devices no matter where you are.
19. Compact Umbrella
If you’re heading to a rainy destination like Ireland, it’s essential to pack a compact umbrella or a Compact Umbrella or Packable Rain Jacket in your carry-on. Actually, the weather can be unpredictable anywhere these days. Even in sunny Spain, there are areas where you might experience rain during the peak summer season (like Northern Spain). Having one of these handy items will keep you dry.
20. Reusable Shopping Bag
Bringing a Reusable Shopping Bag in your carry-on is a smart and eco-friendly choice for any traveler (especially if, like me, you always shop for handmade souvenirs and foodie gifts). Not only is it convenient for carrying extra items you pick up along the way, but it also helps reduce plastic waste, making it a sustainable option.
21. Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot / eSIM
Bringing a portable Wi-Fi hotspot or eSIM in my carry-on is a must. It allows to navigate, book last-minute tickets, stay in touch with family or work, and share moments on social media without relying on potentially expensive or unreliable airport networks. My favorites are Saily eSIM (you can use “AtLifestyleCrossroads” for a 5% discount) and NordVPN (which help me connect safely to public Wi-Fi and bypass censorship).
22. Wipe and Go Instant Stain Remover
Bringing a Wipe and Go Instant Stain Remover can be a lifesaver on the go. Having something to save clothes from stains during the day without needing a washing machine is incredibly convenient. Its compact size makes it easy to slip into your carry-on bag, sparing you the stress of ruined clothing.
23. Spare Memory Card + Storage
If you love capturing memories on camera while traveling ( I use Canon), you can’t go wrong with a spare memory card. Whether you’re exploring a new city, hiking in nature, or attending a unique Spanish festival, no one wants to run out of space at a crucial moment. Having a Spare Memory Card ensures you won’t miss anything, and this extra storage is really handy too.
24. Wrinkle Releaser Spray / Travel Steamer
Wrinkle Releaser Spray or a Portable 2-in-1 Travel Steamer might come in handy if you plan to go out for fine dining or attend performances where people tend to dress up a bit. Not every hotel has ironing boards, so having a wrinkle-reducing solution is perfect for those special trips.
- Compact and easy to carry. It fits perfectly in any luggage, making it your perfect travel companion or a chic addition to your evening dresses
- Breathable, making it perfect for any season
- Machine-washable, easy to maintain its softness and beauty
25. Travel Size Toothbrush kit
Depending on the length of your flight, I often pack a Pre-Pasted Mini-Toothbrush kit in my carry-on. It started back when I wore braces, and cleaning my teeth after a meal was a must. These days, I still bring it for both convenience and a feeling of freshness on the go.
26. Documents
Don’t forget to bring your passport, visa, and printed boarding pass in your carry-on for easy access and peace of mind during travel. In my Spain packing list, I also recommend having printed copies of all important documents and the contact information for your embassy.
27. Compression socks
I used to wear compression socks during my pregnancy while traveling for babymoon trips, but they’re a handy tool for many travelers. Sitting for long periods on flights can negatively impact circulation, so wearing compression socks applies gentle pressure to your feet, ankles, and legs, promoting better blood flow and reducing swelling.
29. Important Medicine / Medical Device
If you have any prescription medication, don’t forget to pack some in your carry-on to avoid the risk of losing it with checked luggage. Be sure to keep it in its original bottle with the prescription details clearly visible. Security checks can be unpredictable, so having your name on the prescription label ensures you can easily verify the medications or medical devices you are carrying if needed.
30. Activities or games
Whether you’re on a long flight, enduring a layover, or simply looking for a way to pass the time, having small activities like a coloring book Is amazing (I’m obsessed with this Nature, garden, and forest, but it can be anything you like – mandalas, travel games, puzzles, watercolor, mazes, or sudoku) – all of these can be a great way to stay entertained on the road.
31. Snacks
I always bring a few nutritious, healthy snacks in my carry-on. Even on the best flights, I often feel like the food isn’t as fresh as it is on the ground or isn’t nutritious enough. So, bringing my favorite treats makes any trip more enjoyable right from the start. I do intermittent fasting, so I can usually go a while without food, but many travelers feel hungry between airplane meal services, and having your own snacks ensures you have something satisfying when you need it. I like all things gluten-free and sugar-free (as much as possible), like pistachios, edamame, roasted seaweed, dark chocolate nuts, almond flour crackers, chia & flaxseed crackers, and chocolate almond & sea salt.
32. Travel wallet and anti-theft bag
A travel wallet/money belt and an anti-theft bag are essential items to pack in your carry-on to keep your valuables safe and organized while on the move, especially if you plan to explore major European capitals like Barcelona, where occasional robberies can be a concern. A travel wallet helps keep important documents like your passport, boarding passes, credit cards, and cash in one secure place, making them easy to access. Meanwhile, an anti-theft bag, with features like hidden zippers, lockable compartments, and a blocking technology, provides an extra layer of security, protecting your belongings from pickpockets.
33. Reusable silicone zip bags
Reusable zip bags are a versatile item to include on any packing list. They’re perfect for organizing small items and keeping toiletries, snacks, or electronic accessories separated. These bags help prevent leaks or spills from damaging other items in your bag, and you never know when you might need one on the go, so I always bring a few just in case.
Packing the right carry-on essentials can significantly enhance your travel experience, making it more comfortable, organized, and stress-free. Over the years, I’ve curated my own list of carry-on must-haves, which has helped me navigate airports and long flights with ease. What are your must-haves for a smooth trip? I always travel with checked bags. But my carry on contains all the most important things I need. This was a good checklist of things to make sure get packed. But I often forget to bring skin cream and pay for it for days after a flight! But I no longer ever forget my supply of sanitizing wipes!
Hello! Thank you for your useful tips! I would add a plaster for feet as I usually walk on foot all the time when come to a new place.
Great list! A travel blanket or wrap is always essential for me on an international flight.
When you travel a lot you definitely work out the best things to pack and have your favourite or must have list. Yours looks similar to mine.
Such a good list! I’ll start integrating the collapsable bottle and electrolytes into my carry on moving forward. Thank you! And I so hear you on the screen-free books and audio books. I’ve found my kindle essential because it doesn’t have a glare and eliminates any blue light while reading.
I can never leave home without my little medicine kit that holds my migraine meds just in case I get one on a trip, some Pepto for any stomach issues, as well as my battery chargers for all my gadgets. I need to find a lighter one as my on the go charger is so heavy!
A very comprehensive list. Ipad is essential for me too. Travel size first aid kit a must also.
Great tips – on my list!
