Why Autumn is the Perfect Time to Explore Spain

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons for traveling in Spain. While the Iberian Peninsula may not be world-famous for its fall foliage, those who know where to look can still find Spanish landscapes awash in golden, red, and orange hues.

After more than 15 years as an expat exploring the Iberian Peninsula, I’ve discovered some incredible autumn destinations and breathtaking natural wonders – many of which I once searched for myself. Now, I’m excited to share my favorite spots for experiencing Spain’s enchanting autumn scenery.

Why Visit Spain in Autumn?

Autumn in Spain is the perfect time for sightseeing without the crowds of peak season. Popular destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, and Mallorca are more relaxed, while southern cities such as Seville and Córdoba – often too hot in summer – become much more enjoyable in September and October. During these months, much of Spain’s Mediterranean coast, including Costa Brava, Costa Blanca, and the Balearic Islands, still offer great beach weather.

Autumn is also ideal for hiking and exploring Spain’s stunning national parks, from the dramatic Pyrenees to enchanting forests bursting with vibrant fall colors.

For November, I mostly recommend city breaks, as the weather can be unpredictable – some years feel like a late summer, while others bring sudden chills, rainstorms, sea storms, and even snow in the mountains. But no matter what, the landscapes come alive with the magic of autumn foliage in many of the Spanish regions.

What’s Spain’s Weather Like This Fall?

If you’re wondering whether Spain is still warm in autumn, the answer is mostly yes – especially in southern and eastern regions, where you can enjoy a summer-like vacation without the intense heat or crowds. Best Places to See Fall Foliage in Spain

1. Asturias in Autumn

Asturias, one of the rainiest – and greenest – regions in Spain, transforms into a vibrant tapestry of autumn colors thanks to its lush forests of beech, oak, and chestnut. My last road trip through the region was in July, but I’m already dreaming of returning to experience its fall magic.

Be sure to visit Picos de Europa, one of Spain’s most iconic national parks, and the enchanting Bosque de Muniellos, a protected nature reserve that truly comes alive in autumn. With average temperatures ranging from 18–22°C (64–72°F) in September to 12–17°C (54–63°F) in October, it’s the perfect time for hiking and scenic drives. 2. Fall in The Pyrenees of Spain

The Spanish Pyrenees is one of my all-time favorite destinations. The region is incredibly beautiful all year round. Last year I was lucky to visit the Pyrenees of Catalonia in October and it ended up on my list of favorite trips of 2023. From the Pyrenees of Catalonia, I would highlight Aiguestortes National Park and Bosque del Carlac (check out this IG Reel and TikTok for more details).

In the Aragon Pyrenees, set your eyes on Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, while the Pyrenees of Navarra are known for Selva de Irati. Also, do not miss Fageda d’en Jordà in La Garrotxa Natural Park (one of the most epic gems of Catalonia region). You can check out all of my trips & itineraries under the hashtag #Pyrenees.

3. Madrid in Autumn

Autumn is the perfect time to plan a weekend getaway to Madrid and visit small towns nearby. The city’s beloved green oasis, El Retiro Park, bursts into brilliant shades of gold and crimson, making it one of the best spots to enjoy the season’s beauty. With average temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) in September to around 15°C (59°F) in late October, the weather is ideal for sightseeing without the summer crowds.

Last year, while traveling from Madrid to Valencia by car, I also stopped in the nearby town of Aranjuez – and it was just as enchanting, with its royal gardens glowing in the autumn light. For more inspiration, read this post on the best things to do in Madrid.

4. Cuenca in Autumn

While my most recent road trip to Cuenca took place in December, a few years ago I was lucky enough to experience the region at its autumn peak – when the landscape transforms into a stunning mosaic of gold, amber, and crimson.

One of the highlights is Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park, a lesser-known gem filled with hidden hiking trails and vibrant fall foliage. On the drive to the Enchanted City of Cuenca, we were surprised to stumble upon several scenic viewpoints that offered breathtaking autumn panoramas.

With average temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) in September to 14°C (57°F) in October, autumn is the perfect time to explore Cuenca’s natural beauty. Much of central Spain is flat and exposed, offering little shade – making summer visits less comfortable. While Cuenca isn’t typically overcrowded, it’s best enjoyed in the cooler, more pleasant autumn months.

5. The Valencian Community in Autumn

The Valencian Community is made up of three provinces: Alicante, Valencia, and Castellón. While Alicante and Valencia tend to get overcrowded in the summer, autumn offers a quieter, more comfortable way to enjoy these regionS. Known for its Mediterranean climate, sandy beaches, and orange groves, it’s not typically associated with fall foliage – but after living here for years, I’ve uncovered a few hidden gems that beautifully capture the essence of the season.

With average temperatures around 27°C (81°F) in September and 21°C (70°F) in October, the weather in the Valencia Community remains warm but pleasant – perfect for outdoor adventures.

Some of my favorite autumn discoveries have come from hiking in Castellón, where charming villages, like Bejís, offer scenic trails surrounded by golden hues. Montanejos, a popular summer day trip from Valencia, is also stunning in autumn, with its colorful landscapes and fewer crowds.

In Alicante, I highly recommend visiting Jardín de l’Albarda in the fall. It’s one of the most unique gardens in Spain – peaceful, beautifully maintained, and especially enchanting as the leaves begin to turn. You can explore the full photo gallery here.

6. La Rioja and Navarra

A road trip through La Rioja and Navarra is an excellent way to experience autumn in Spain. La Rioja is renowned for its wineries and the stunning fall colors of La Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park, where average temperatures in autumn range from 10°C to 18°C (50°F to 64°F).

In Navarra, the highlight of autumn is the Selva de Irati (which I’ve mentioned earlier in the Pyrenees section), with temperatures typically between 8°C and 16°C (46°F to 61°F). Beyond that, Navarra offers several other beautiful natural spots where visitors can fully immerse themselves in the seasonal transformation, including Parque Natural Señorío de Bertiz, Bosque de Quinto Real, Bosque de Basajaunberro, and Bosque de Orgi.
