Why Greece is worth visiting
Greece is one of the most unique destinations in Europe, renowned for its unmatched history and culture. If the world weren’t so vast, I’d always find myself returning to Greece for holidays. I never tire of exploring this magical country.
Charming villages, narrow streets, surreal white-and-blue architecture, crystal-clear waters, and the warm hospitality of the Greek people make every visit unforgettable. And of course, the incredible food! Greece’s deep sense of family and tradition creates a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel at home, no matter where you’re from. There are countless experiences in Greece that deserve a spot on your travel bucket list.
However, Greece is more than just stunning landscapes and delicious cuisine. The contributions of ancient Greek civilization to math, art, and science are truly remarkable. Our modern alphabet, democracy, the Olympic Games, and the timeless philosophies of thinkers like Aristotle all have their origins in Greece. Even today, we continue to tell stories inspired by Greek mythology, from superheroes to mythical creatures. It’s amazing how a culture that flourished over 3,000 years ago still influences each person around the world.
32 Bucket-List Experiences in Greece
1. Visit Olimpia
First of all, let’s admit it – Greeks revolutionized sports. Olympia was famous far beyond Greek borders for hosting the Olympic Games every four years, starting in 776 BCE. This ancient tradition is what inspired the modern Olympic Games, which began in 1896. And do you know where marathons originated? According to Greek legend, a soldier named Pheidippides, who fought in the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, ran approximately 26 miles to Athens to deliver the news of the Greek victory.
So, if you love sports and want to explore its history, visiting Olympia Archeological Site should definitely be one of your top experiences in Greece. Imagine – this is where it all began! Even though the Olympic stadium was smaller than I expected (honestly, if no one had told me it was the stadium, I might not have guessed), being able to walk through the birthplace of the Olympic Games is thrilling nonetheless.
2. Visiting Acropolis in Athens
The Acropolis in Athens, a universal symbol of the remarkable Greek civilization, truly needs no introduction. It stands as one of the most impressive historical sites in the world and is undeniably a must-see experience when visiting Greece. However, my first visit to Athens left me with mixed feelings. We encountered several demonstrations, and at times I questioned whether it was the kind of city I would enjoy.
Despite this, wandering through the ancient ruins of those iconic temples sparked a deep fascination with Greek mythology – leading me from history books to modern retellings bestsellers by Madeline Miller, such as Circe and The Song of Achilles, which made perfect companions for reading on the road. On my next trip to Greece, I plan to read Ariadne, A Thousand Ships, or Clytemnestra.
The views from the Acropolis were breathtaking, and I left wishing I could return to explore more things to do in Athens and uncover its hidden gems beyond the tourist paths.
3. Visit Mykonos
Mykonos is undoubtedly the most glamorous island in Greece – everything comes with a hefty price tag, yet you can’t help but fall in love with its iconic whitewashed houses and charming streets. Known for its vibrant party scene and nightlife, this Greek island is often a top destination for those looking to dance the night away. However, there are actually plenty of cool things to do in Mykonos for all tastes.
Speaking of Mykonos’ fame for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters, here’s a tip: be cautious where you swim. Despite the allure of the stunning blue waters, I had an unfortunate encounter with a sea urchin! 4. Enjoy views of a lifetime in Santorini
Santorini is undeniably one of the most romantic travel destinations in the world, and Oía is simply one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever visited. The views here will leave you speechless – it’s truly one of those places you have to experience at least once in a lifetime.
Santorini is also famous for its stunning sunsets, often considered some of the most beautiful on the planet. Honestly, words can hardly do justice to places like Santorini and Mykonos. Photos of whitewashed buildings set against the backdrop of vibrant blue waters capture some of the magic, but seeing it in person is a different experience altogether.
One thing to keep in mind is visiting during peak season, particularly in the summer months. As one of the most romantic destinations globally, Santorini draws large crowds of tourists. To fully enjoy the island’s charm and avoid the crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder season to keep the magic of your trip alive. 5. Explore the 60 million-year-old rocks of Meteora
It’s impossible to miss photos of Meteora on social media. This UNESCO World Heritage site, located about a 4-hour drive from Athens, is renowned for its towering rock formations, which are 60 million years old. Monks began living here as early as the 9th century, and by the 14th century, monasteries were built atop these dramatic pinnacles. Can you imagine the unique atmosphere of this place?
Meteora’s ancient, spiritual aura reminds me slightly of the Montserrat Monastery in Spain, near Barcelona, though Meteora feels even more ancient and mystical.
6. Explore the Ruins of Delphi
Once considered the center of the world in ancient Greek mythology, Delphi is home to the famous Temple of Apollo, built in the 5th century BC. It was constructed during the height of Greek civilization’s grandeur to protect the city from plague and invasion. This historic site is an absolute must-visit for history enthusiasts on any Greece itinerary, and one of the most popular ways to experience it is through the ‘300 Spartans’ tour.
7. Take a day trip to Zakynthos
Zakynthos is a breathtaking island in Greece and is often considered one of the most Instagrammable locations in the country. However, it is sometimes criticized by travelers who expect the picture-perfect scenes they see on social media, only to find it crowded with visitors, leaving little room to move around.
To avoid this, consider visiting during the off-season. This will allow you to fully enjoy all the amazing things to do in Zakynthos. One of the island’s most famous attractions is the shipwreck of the MV Panagiotis, which ran aground in the 1980s and has remained on the beach ever since.
8. Try authentic feta and the Greek salad
Feta is the traditional cheese of Greece, and you can find it in almost any supermarket across Europe. However, trying feta dishes in Greece is a whole different experience – they are absolutely delicious!
Sheep cheese is also often mentioned as one of the popular foods in the famous Blue Zones, areas where people live longer. This makes me feel like there’s a healthy aspect to eating in Greece as well!
9. Taste Authentic Greek Moussaka
Moussaka is one of my all-time favorite dishes to try in Greece. I love it so much that the last time I was in Crete, I bought local spices to cook it at home as close to the way locals make it as I possibly could. Essentially, moussaka is a layered dish of eggplant, potatoes, and minced meat, topped with a creamy béchamel sauce. But no matter where you are in Greece, it always tastes like heaven in traditional tavernas.
6. Explore the beaches in Crete
While there are many unique beaches across Greece and its islands, two beaches in Crete particularly stand out for their uniqueness – Elafonissi, with its pink sand, and Vai Beach, which is lined with palm trees.
The latter is rumored to have been a filming location for a Bounty commercial (though there are several other places around the world on this list). The truth is, Vai Beach in Crete is epic and truly deserves its international fame.
7. Visit Corfu
Corfu has been on my Greek bucket list for ages, ever since I watched the Darrells TV series. The island is an incredible summer destination, but the Easter festivities in Corfu are especially famous throughout the country, featuring parades, fireworks, and a traditional pot-throwing ceremony!
If you plan on visiting this amazing Greek island, consider spending at least 3 days in Corfu to explore most of the local gems, including Corfu Old Town, Paleokastritsa Beach, Agios Georgios Beach, and Barbati Beach.
8. Hike through the Samaria Gorge
Samaria Gorge is one of the longest gorges in Europe and is considered an epic hiking destination as well as one of the top natural wonders of the island of Crete. The trail takes you through forests, cliffs, and down to the Libyan Sea. While the hike is quite challenging, it is undoubtedly a must-visit for nature lovers in Greece.
10. Visit the Old Town of Rhodes
I visited Rhodes as a stop on one of my first Mediterranean cruises, and its Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, felt truly magical. In fact, one of the main shopping streets resembled a market in Turkey. Rhodes was conquered by the Ottoman Empire after the Siege of Rhodes in 1522, so its cobbled streets, ancient walls, and fortress-like buildings definitely bear traces of Ottoman influence.
Also, Rhodes is also globally renowned for the iconic village of Lindos, famous for its whitewashed houses, maze-like alleys, and the ancient Acropolis perched dramatically above the sea.
11. Explore the Archaeological Museums in Greece
Greece is home to museums that house an unmatched collection of ancient artifacts, ranging from sculptures to pottery. As a destination, Greece is truly a treasure trove for history buffs. Two absolute must-visit spots are the Athens Archaeological Museum and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
However, exploring smaller local museums in Greece along the way, like The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos or Paul Vrellis Greek History Museum, is also a great addition to any Greece bucket list.
12. Explore the Island of Hydra
Located just a short boat ride from Athens, Hydra is a car-free island in Greece where donkeys are still the primary mode of transportation, making it a unique stop on any Greece itinerary. Its picturesque harbor is also well worth a full-day trip.
13. Try Greek Olive Oil
Greek olive oil has been an essential ingredient in local cuisine for centuries. In fact, it rivals the olive oil of Spain and Italy, which are well-known worldwide. Much like the ancient olive trees in Spain, Greece is home to trees so old that they can also be considered monuments. Throughout the country, you can find olive oil tasting tours and guided visits to local olive oil producers.
You’ll find plenty of Greek olive-tasting tours throughout the country and its islands, with popular spots including Vraganiotika, Kalamata, and Epanos Archanes in Crete.
14. Try Greek Cooking Class
Greek recipes are legendary, so taking a cooking class with locals and learning all the tips and secrets firsthand is such a unique experience, no matter where you travel. Ever since my last cooking class in Madrid, I decided I would seek out new cooking classes with locals whenever I can, especially when it comes to Mediterranean cuisines with their mouthwatering dishes.
While there are countless cooking classes throughout Greece and its islands, the easiest place to begin is the capital city of Athens, where you’ll find the greatest variety – from classes that end with a rooftop lunch overlooking the Acropolis to those that include a guided visit to a traditional Greek market.
15. Go on a boat trip or tour
The waters in Greece are well known for their breathtaking, crystal-clear hues. One of the best ways to enjoy the views and explore some of the nearby islands is by taking a boat tour. This option is available at nearly every Greek destination, making it almost impossible to miss a cruise in Greece.
While there are countless boat trip opportunities across Greece and its islands, some of the most popular options for cruise enthusiasts include the 3-Islands tour to Agistri, Moni, and Aegina, a boat trip to Symi Island, a sailing cruise to Dia Island, and a Santorini sunset cruise. Personally, I’ve taken a boat cruise in Santorini, though I wish I had done it at sunset.
16. Explore Skopelos Island
While every Greek island is unique in its own way, Skopelos is one of the country’s most well-known filming destinations, as parts of the famous Mamma Mia movies were filmed here! It is definitely a popular place to visit on any Greek bucket list.
17. Go wine tasting in Greece
Not many people know that Greece produces some unique wines worth tasting. For instance, the island of Santorini is famous for its volcanic soil, which gives its wines a distinctive flavor. However, you can find wine tours at local vineyards throughout the entire country. Thessaly and Naoussa are popular wine-tasting destinations in Greece.
18. Visit Mount Olympus
Climbing to the summit of the tallest mountain in Greece is definitely a bucket-list adventure! Also, Mount Olympus is a symbolic destination due to its significance in Greek mythology. Standing at nearly 3,000 meters in height, it typically takes most fit hikers two days to complete the ascent.
19. Discover Ancient Knossos in Crete
The Palace of Knossos is one of Crete’s most important archaeological sites from the Bronze Age (and one of the most significant in all of Greece). It is believed to be the center of Minoan civilization and is famously linked to the legend of the Minotaur.
There’s also the enduring mystery of the Phaistos Disc, discovered on Crete and now on display at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Despite modern advances in technology, scientists have yet to decipher it, and very little is known about the Minoan written language.
20. Visit Mount Athos
Mount Athos is one of the top sacred places in Greece and holds great significance for Orthodox Christians around the world. It is considered a holy site and is home to numerous monasteries. However, women have been prohibited from entering the island for over 1,000 years. Olly male visitors can stay for free in one of the monasteries while visiting Athos.
21. Enjoy Xylokastro-Evrostini
Xylokastro-Evrostini is a lesser-known Greek natural gem, located just 90 minutes from Athens. The region is often compared to the Swiss Alps due to its unique landscapes, which are quite different from the typical olive groves and dry lands found throughout much of Greece. The area is filled with hiking trails, and kayaking on the lake is another popular activity to enjoy.
23. Take A Boat Tour Of Melissani Lake
Melissani Lake is a Greek natural gem located on the beautiful island of Kefalonia. This underground lake is surrounded by stunning natural rock formations and features crystal-clear turquoise waters. It is definitely one of the most fairytale-like places in Greece.
24. Enjoy hiking at the Dragon Lakes in Epirus
The Dragon Lakes of Epirus are another must-visit for nature lovers in Greece. This popular hiking destination is known for the mysterious legend of two dragons. The lakes can be visited on a day trip from Ioannina, and the main trail is 17 km long, starting from the village of Mikro Papingo in the Pindus Mountains.
25. Stay in a traditional Greek house
As I’ve mentioned before, beyond its famous landmarks, Greece truly captivates travelers with its laid-back lifestyle. Staying in a local home has definitely been one of the most rewarding experiences, allowing me to interact with locals and immerse myself in the culture on a whole new level. So, when planning your trip to Greece, consider swapping a hotel stay for a more authentic local experience.
During our last trip to Crete, we spent a few days in the remote village of Kato Zakros, which became one of the highlights of the vacation. Our host would leave a basket of homemade fruit for us every day, and even shopping at the local supermarket felt like so much fun, as it gave us the chance to blend in with the locals.
26. Learn To Greek Dance
Much like Ireland is known for its folk dance, it’s impossible to visit Greece without learning about Sirtaki. This traditional dance involves fast footwork, kicking, and leg slapping while linking arms with others in the group. It’s a fun and energetic experience, often performed at gatherings, celebrations, and parties across Greece.
Actually, while traveling across Greece, we bought a CD in one of the souvenir shops to listen to Greek music on the road. Naturally, Sirtaki became one of the catchiest tunes we heard, and it still brings back memories of those trips. Below, I’ve included a video just in case, but I’m pretty sure you’ll recognize the melody from the first few notes. Here’s a YouTube video featuring the Sirtaki Zorba dance.
27. Visit he Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus
This ancient theatre of Epidaurus is known as one of the most valuable archaeological finds in Greece. Built in the 4th century BC, it was dedicated to the ancient Greek god of medicine, Asclepius. The theatre is renowned for its impeccable acoustics, which are still evident today, as it continues to host performances on special occasions.
28. Explore Ancient Mycenae and Tiryns
The ancient cities of Mycenae and Tiryns are epic destinations for fans of ancient Greek ruins and legends. These sites were home to a powerful civilization that dominated the region from the 15th to the 12th centuries BC and played a crucial role in the development of Greek culture. Both places are linked to Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad, making them iconic bucket list destinations in Greece to enjoy on a day trip from Athenes.
29. Visit Thessaloniki and its White Tower
Located on the waterfront of Thessaloniki, the White Tower is one of the most unique landmarks in Greece. Dating back to the Byzantine era (around the 12th century), it has served various purposes throughout history, including as a fortress and later as a prison during the Ottoman period.
30. Make a stop at The Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal, located just an hour’s drive from Athens, is one of the world’s most remarkable engineering feats. It connects the Aegean Sea to the Ionian Sea, cutting through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth in Greece. Stretching 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) in length and only 21.4 meters (70 feet) wide, the canal allows ships to bypass the long and often treacherous route around the Peloponnese Peninsula.
31. Visit the Cave of the Apocalypse
The Cave of the Apocalypse is another holy site in Greece that attracts a large number of Christian pilgrims. Located on the island of Patmos, it is believed to be the place where St. John the Divine received the divine revelation that would later become the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. According to Christian tradition, St. John retreated to this cave in the 1st century AD to pray and meditate during his exile on the island.
32. Explore the Bridge of Arta
The Bridge of Arta is a historic Ottoman-era stone bridge, considered one of the most unique in Europe. It is located in the town of Arta, in northwestern Greece, and is associated with a mysterious local legend. According to the myth, the construction of the bridge required the sacrifice of a woman, who was entombed within the structure to ensure its stability.

OMG Greece is just so gorgeous isn’t it?! My grandparents had a house on Corfu, and we use to go up there every summer!! Hands down some of my favourite memories, and everyone is so lovely over there!! I have only ever been to Corfu, but I really REALLY want to go to both Santorini and Mykonos!! I am dying to go to Greece! I have never seen a photo that isn’t beautiful! I heard in recent years, it has become less expensive to travel to the region. Did you find that to be true?
There is just so much to do there! And so much history! Oh, and the food? It must be to die for!
I feel like Mykonos and Santorini are so popular between international tourists that prices there only keep growing every year! However, on the most of the less known islands the price/quality is generally better than anywhere in Europe!
And yes – food is my absolute favorite!

Crete sounds like my kind of place 🙂 I don’t usually enjoy islands, but that’s usually because they tend to be super resort-y. If I have a chance to get away from that for a while, it’s perfect 🙂

I also try to avoid resorty places lol you just don´t get an authentic experience there!
Maybe, my high expectations are to blame here…but I felt like the city was dirty, crowded and in some areas even not quite safe! Not that Rome was too clean, but it had some special charm – which for me, was absent in Athens!

Cruise is the best way to see more islands – that’s for sure. However, I visited Santorini and Rhodes as a part of a cruise and next year – Crete and Mykonos, as a separate trip. And I really enjoyed the second more. You get to spend more time on each island and don´t check your clock every 15 min (or at least I do so lol) – just not to be late for a boat!

Greece seriously looks so lovely. I concur, I absolutely love Greece. I’m yet to get to Mykonos and Crete, but the others on your list I’ve experienced. Athens is my favourite city alongside Istanbul and Beirut. It’s all about the history and culture, not to mention the food and hospitality.
I also love Istanbul and would love to visit Beirut one day! History, food, culture – everything is perfect about Greece!
Greece never ceases to amaze me, Anna. These are some very charming places. Greece is definitely easy to fall in love with. Which is the best summer destination to visit there?
I felt like islands are the best for summer, however if you could go in September – it´s much better! By the way, Athens is sooooooo hot to explore in the summer months. First time I’ve been to Rhodes and Santorini in July – you could imagine it was very touristic! Next year I went to Crete and Mykonos in September and it was way better!
Greece is on my bucket list — still haven’t been! My top choice of your 5 is Athens because of the history there. But I think Santorini would be more beautiful, with the iconic white on white buildings. If I get there, I would want to include all 5 of these places!
History in Athens is impressive indeed! But Santorini is also such a unique place!

Oh no, so sorry to hear you stepped on a sea urchin! Those things are really poisonous, aren’t they? How did you handle it?? Also, what is it about Athens that made you say it isn’t your kind of city?
You know, I thought I was going to die lol but apparently those in Greece were not dangerous ( I read all the information I could possibly find that night lol) And to my surprise the puncture wound disappeared quite soon! I’ve also heard anywhere else across the globe they are quite poisonous – I was lucky it happened in Greece!
And as to Athens – maybe, my high expectations are to blame here, but I felt like the city itself was quite dirty and even not safe in some areas! Didn’t feel any charm at all…
This is inspiration indeed to visit Greece. We’ve only visited Santorini and mykonos during cruise stops. We’d love tO return to explore more. Beautiful photoS!

I’ve only ever been to Halkidiki in Greece but Santorini is on my bucket list and I’d love to see historic Athens too! All of these ideas have given me itchy feet – I’m in desperate need of some travel!
