Where is the most beautiful sunset in the world?
Why are sunsets unique?
There’s something truly unforgettable about experiencing sunsets around the world. Watching the sky slowly melt into shades of gold, pink, and fiery orange at the end of the day feels like a gift – one that’s made even more special when you’re somewhere new. While every sunset carries its own kind of magic, there are certain places where this daily ritual becomes absolutely extraordinary. Sunsets are nature’s gentle reminder that no matter how heavy or challenging the day has been, the ending can still be beautiful. They invite us to pause, breathe, and appreciate our simple existence, if only for a fleeting moment.
A sunset always pulls me into the present. It’s the perfect excuse to slow down, release lingering emotions, and feel deeply grateful for the beauty surrounding us. What makes them even more special is that no two sunsets are ever the same – just as you can never step into the same river twice, because the water is always flowing. This mirrors the duality of life itself: day and night, light and dark, joy and sorrow, beginnings and endings. A sunset symbolizes the closing of one chapter and the quiet promise of another.
Through years of traveling and living abroad, I’ve been lucky enough to witness some of the most breathtaking sunsets around the world. Below is a growing list of destinations where sunsets feel especially unique and unforgettable. I’ll continue adding new places as I go, sharing a little sunset inspiration with you along the way.
My Most Beautiful Sunsets Around The World
1. Ibiza, Spain
My current favorite sunset on this list is Es Vedrà, which I visited during one of my trips to Ibiza. Even through photographs, the landscape feels almost unreal, bathed in soft purple hues that seem straight out of a dream. Ibiza is already known as one of Spain’s most iconic islands, but its sunsets – especially at Es Vedrà – elevate it to a place that undeniably deserves a spot among the world’s most romantic destinations.

2. Mykonos, Greece
While visiting both Mykonos and Santorini felt incredibly unique in their own ways, one of the most breathtaking sunsets I experienced in the Greek islands found me completely by surprise – while riding in a taxi to the Mykonos airport. Santorini is world-famous for having some of the most iconic sunsets on the planet, but its most popular villages can become so crowded that truly enjoying the moment often requires an exclusive villa with a view.
Mykonos, on the other hand, felt less overwhelming by comparison. Even though it’s undeniably one of Greece’s top bucket-list destinations, its sunsets felt more accessible, intimate, and unexpectedly magical.

3. Queenstown, New Zealand
Whether you’re exploring New Zealand’s North or South Island, the natural beauty of this far-away country is nothing short of unforgettable – so it’s no surprise that its sunsets feel just as special. The sunset captured below in Queenstown is difficult to put into words; its beauty goes far beyond what a photograph can convey. Some moments simply have to be witnessed to be truly felt.

4. Iceland
Iceland is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever visited. During a seven-day road trip around the island, I was surrounded by an endless variety of awe-inspiring landscapes – so it felt only natural that Iceland’s sunsets would be just as breathtaking. They’re a seamless extension of the raw beauty that exists in every direction.
While the southern part of the country can get busy during summer, traveling around the full island often means experiencing these unforgettable sunsets almost entirely to yourself.

5. New York, USA
While my heart will always lean toward sunsets in wild, untouched nature, I unexpectedly discovered that city sunsets can be just as unforgettable while visiting New York. As the sun begins to set, architectural landmarks and towering skyscrapers glow with endless hues and reflections, transforming the city into something almost magical.
So, I was walking along the High Line when the sunset captured in the photo below simply happened – one of those spontaneous moments that stay with you long after the light fades.

6. Thailand
Sunsets in Thailand are truly special, shaped by the region’s extraordinary natural beauty. Krabi’s coastline – with its dramatic limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and scattered islands – creates a breathtaking stage for the sun as it sets. The sky often ignites in vibrant shades of orange, pink, and purple, reflecting off the water and bathing the landscape in a soft, magical glow.
The sunset captured in the photo below took place in Krabi, and experiencing it in person felt completely surreal.

7. San Francisco, USA
San Francisco is one of my favorite places I’ve visited in the U.S. so far – I love everything about it: the foggy atmosphere, the historic trams, the architecture by day, and especially the soft pink sunsets that made me fall even deeper in love with the city. Its hilly landscape offers stunning panoramic views as the sun sets over iconic sights like the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the San Francisco Bay. I’d love nothing more than to return and experience it all over again.

8. Benicassim, Spain
Benicassim is a quiet, lesser-known Spanish seaside town that remains relatively undiscovered internationally, yet is home to some truly picture-perfect beaches. I lived here when I first moved to Spain, and long walks along the shore with my husband – or bike rides by the sea – became part of everyday life. I’ve lost count of how many sunsets I’ve watched there, but the one captured in the photo below felt especially meaningful, as it found me cycling along the Mediterranean coast, completely present in the moment.

9. Lake Maggiore, Italy
Visiting Italy is always a unique experience, but watching the sun set over its magnificent lakes – Como, Garda, and Maggiore – feels like stepping into a real-life fairytale. It’s no wonder Mark Twain once said, “The Creator made Italy from designs by Michelangelo.” Those words feel especially true when you’re wandering along the serene Italian lakes, surrounded by elegant architecture and timeless beauty.
I often think Italians must have a deep, instinctive sense of aesthetics – perhaps born from growing up immersed in such beauty – which might explain why so many of the world’s most influential fashion and design brands come from Italy.

10. Ainsa, Spain
The Spanish Pyrenees is one of my all-time favorite destinations – I visit so often that you can follow my adventures under the #Pyrenees hashtag. The region is home to some of Spain’s most iconic national parks and lakes, offering endless natural beauty. There’s something truly majestic about watching the sun dip behind these rugged peaks, painting the sky with colors that feel larger than life.

11. Paphos, Cyprus
During my trip to Paphos in Cyprus, I discovered a truly unforgettable experience for history lovers – ancient ruins at sunset. As someone passionate about history, this moment felt magical. Watching the sun dip behind centuries-old landmarks creates a profound sense of connection to the past. As the warm golden light of the sunset washes over the ruins, it’s almost as if you’re being transported to another era entirely.

13. Oslo, Norway
While I absolutely love traveling to Northern Europe, I have a special affinity for the Nordic countries – their design, their understated way of life, and the quiet beauty that comes with cold weather. Copenhagen and Oslo are among my favorite cities, and there’s something undeniably magical about Nordic sunsets. They feel like a glimpse into the Viking era, with fjords and snow-dusted landscapes that look straight out of a storybook.
The sunset captured in the photo below took place in Oslo. During winter, Norway experiences very short days, with the sun sometimes setting as early as 3:30 PM. Yet, the low angle of the sun casts a long, soft glow that feels incredibly dramatic. These early sunsets are particularly captivating, with the contrast of bright skies against snowy landscapes creating moments that feel almost otherworldly.

13. Lucerne, Switzerland

While I adore Switzerland in winter – especially its fairytale-like Christmas markets – after visiting Lucerne, the country has secured a spot as one of my favorite romantic winter destinations. The crystal-clear waters of Lake Lucerne, nestled among snow-capped mountains and dotted with graceful swans, create an incredibly picturesque setting to enjoy sunsets throughout the year.
Inspiring Sunset Quotes
- ‘When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.’ – Mahatma Gandhi
- “Dusk is just an illusion because the sun is either above the horizon or below it. And that means that day and night are linked in a way that few things are there cannot be one without the other yet they cannot exist at the same time. How would it feel I remember wondering to be always together yet forever apart?”- Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook
- “There’s a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they’re absolutely free. Don’t miss so many of them.”
– Jo Walton - “Never waste any amount of time doing anything important when there is a sunset outside that you should be sitting under!”- C. JoyBell C.
- “Age is irrelevant. Ask me how many sunsets I’ve seen, hearts I’ve loved, trips I’ve taken, or concerts I’ve been too. That’s how old I am.” – Joëlle
- “It’s almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream.” – Bern Williams
- “Sunsets are proof that no matter what happens, every day can end beautifully.”- Kristen Butler
Where in the world are the prettiest sunsets?
While you might have your own favorite sunset moments from my photos, the truth is no camera can fully capture a 360-degree panorama – or the feeling of truly being in a place. If I had to choose the ultimate destinations for sunsets around the world, I’d pick Es Vedrà in Ibiza and Lake Lucerne in Switzerland – both experiences felt utterly surreal, like stepping into a dream.
