Visiting Zaragoza in Autumn

While Zaragoza might not be the first place that comes to mind for fall foliage in Spain, it’s definitely my favorite season for exploring the city and its surrounding areas. The temperatures are mild, typically ranging between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), and the summer crowds have mostly disappeared. Even though Zaragoza is often associated with its desert-like landscapes and the relentless Spanish sun, autumn transforms the region into a more comfortable and inviting destination for long walks and outdoor adventures.

I’ll be heading back to Zaragoza soon to bring you more local tips and itineraries. In the meantime, I thought sharing my personal list of the best hikes near Zaragoza would be helpful. Since this topic hasn’t been covered on the blog yet, and many of you might be planning your next autumn getaway in Spain, here’s a quick guide to some of the top trails in the area.

Here are a few popular hiking trails in Moncayo Natural Park:

Visiting the Pyrenees of Spain from Zaragoza

Zaragoza also serves as a great starting point for a getaway to the Pyrenees of Spain. You can check out all of my posts on the region under the hashtag Pyrenees.

The closest national park to Zaragoza is Ordesa y Monte Perdido, but it takes about 2.5 hours by car to reach it from the city, making it a bit far for a day trip. However, if you plan to stay in Zaragoza for more than a few days, I highly recommend exploring the top hiking trails in the Pyrenees.

Tips for Autumn Hiking in Zaragoza

  • Dress in layers – autumn weather in Aragon can be unpredictable, with cool mornings and warmer afternoons
  • Start earlier – the days are getting shorter in autumn, so it’s best to start your hike early to make the most of daylight
  • Pack essentials – even on shorter hikes, bring plenty of water, snacks, a map or GPS, and a basic first-aid kit: read more about my hiking essentials
  • Respect nature – follow the Leave No Trace rule to protect the beautiful Spanish landscapes

This list is just the beginning, and I’m excited to explore more and share my findings with you in the coming months. Stay tuned for more detailed guides and tips on Zaragoza and its surroundings!
