Visiting Snaefellsnes Peninsula in Iceland
Map of the best places to visit in Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Nestled in the western part of Iceland, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature” due to its stunning diversity of landscapes. During our road trip through Iceland, we dedicated a day to exploring the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and it was truly a magical experience. I can completely understand why the French novelist Jules Verne drew inspiration from this region and the Snaefellsjökull volcano for his book Journey to the Center of the Earth. There’s something enchanting about traveling around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This area captures the breathtaking beauty for which Iceland is famous, yet it remains much less visited than the southern part of the country. So, even though we traveled during the peak season in August, I felt completely immersed in nature.
Here’s an ultimate map of all the stunning locations to visit in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Below, you can check out the photos of the places we managed to visit. While one day wasn’t enough to see it all – and I wish we had more time – I believe that visiting a new place, even for a short time, is always better than not visiting at all.

Where to stay in Snaefellsnes peninsula
Top Places to visit in Snaefellsnes peninsula, Iceland
The 100 km-long Snæfellsnes Peninsula is incredibly diverse in terms of landscapes. Here, you can find the famous Snaefellsjokull volcano, a symbol of the country. Here are some of the most impressive places we managed to see on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula:
1. Raudfeldargja gorge
Raudfeldargja Gorge is one of the most unique places to visit in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It looks completely otherworldly. You can spot the gorge from the road, and once you park, there’s a short uphill hike to reach it. Inside the gorge, you can explore and follow a creek that leads to tiny waterfalls, stepping on stones along the way.

2. Arnastapi and Hellnar
Arnarstapi and Hellnar are two charming coastal villages connected by a scenic walking trail that hugs the cliffs, offering stunning views of the ocean. Arnarstapi features dramatic rock formations, including the iconic Gatklettur arch, while Hellnar is known for its picturesque harbor and birdlife. We made a stop for snacks at Fjöruhúsið Café, which is a lovely spot for coffee when the weather is nice (though it was quite touristy).

3. Londrangar cliffs
The Londrangar cliffs are striking rock pinnacles that rise dramatically from the ocean. These cliffs are home to various seabirds, and a short hike from the parking area takes you to viewing platforms where you can admire the stunning landscape. The cliffs are especially vibrant during the summer months when the birdlife is abundant.

4. Olafsvik
We briefly stopped in Olafsvik, where the view felt like stepping into a picturesque postcard of the North Atlantic. This charming fishing village offers breathtaking panoramas of the coastline. Olafsvik is located near Snaefellsjokull National Park, where you can explore some of the most stunning hikes in Iceland.
5. Kirkjufell mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall
Kirkjufell is one of the most well-known mountains in Iceland and is also famous as one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones. With its distinctive shape and picturesque surroundings, it provides a stunning backdrop for any photograph. A visit to Kirkjufell is often complemented by the nearby Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, where you can capture the perfect shot of water cascading in front of the mountain. This spot is a must-visit in Snæfellsnes Peninsula, especially during sunrise or sunset when the light casts a magical glow on the landscape.

6. Stykkisholmur
Stykkisholmur is a charming fishing town known for its vibrant harbor and picturesque views of the surrounding islands. Here, we had a delicious dinner at Sjávarpakkhúsið restaurant.

I wish we had more time to check out more epic places to visit on the map of Snaefellsnes Peninsula. This place is a treasury of natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination in Iceland.

We went to Iceland a couple of years ago, but it was Mid-Winter. I really want to do a road trip like this through Iceland, so really great to find these stops! Thank you for sharing. #theweeklypostcard
Thanks Upeksha! I´d really like to see Iceland in winter as well, all the frozen waterfalls might look unreal!
It seems that everyone is in Iceland these days.
I´ve also noticed it´s become so popular in these recent years! Everyone is talking about it or planning to go. And it´s obvious, seeing the pics of Icelandic landscapes gives you some serious Wanderlust…
Iceland is really high up on my list! You’re pictures are amazing! I hope I can make it there next summer. It looks like there really is so much to see. Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard.
Thanks Anisa! I hope you´ll make it! This country is incredible <3
Those stops on your trip are so gorgeous! I am sure your heart beat a little bit faster when you saw those sights. I have read a lot of posts about Iceland but the beauty of the country is that each post has a new canyon, a new coastline or a new waterfall. It has so many places to discover.
Couldn´t agree more! I´ve also read tones of posts and seen so many places when there. And yet every once in a while I see someone posting something from Iceland and I´m like “OMG! Why haven´t I heard about this place?” Icelandic natural wonders are endless…
The more I read about Iceland, the more I’d love to visit it. I would definitely stop to see those waterfalls. There seems to be a lot to discover on the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
Thanks for stopping by, Anda! For years I was dreaming of visiting Iceland! This country is like nothing else I´ve ever seen…
My goodness, that landscape is sweeping and dramatic and extreme. I was brought up in Scotland and these landscapes remind me of the windswept western isles. How lovely the evening shot is. Would love to get there one day,
Iceland is such a beautiful country! I would love to visit Scotland one day, though… From the pictures I saw it looks like an amazing place to explore!
The huge stone structure of Bárður Snæfellsás looks awesome, especially as the stones seem to be stacked on top of each other rather than cemented. Beautiful photos! #TheWeeklyPostcard
Thank you, Ahila!
I’ve seen a lot of Iceland posts and I am loving it, makes me want to visit so bad! It just looks absolutely stunning and so picturesque. I will have to visit and check these places out for sure!
Thanks Yvonne! It was the same with me – I saw all the photos and blog posts about Iceland and get obsessed with visiting this country!
