Top Icelandic Waterfalls to Visit Near Reykjavik
Why are we attracted to waterfalls?
Flying moments, rushing water, flourishing plants, and the fresh fragrance of water spray – these elements create a powerful sense of nature and life. Waterfalls never fail to take my breath away. They embody a peaceful yet powerful beauty that makes us forget the world around us. Many scientific theories suggest that running water emits negative ions. Could this be why we feel such a surge of positive energy when we’re near waterfalls?
So, if you’re visiting Iceland’s capital, be sure to rent a car and explore the numerous popular and lesser-known waterfalls near Reykjavik.

Top Icelandic Waterfalls Near Reykjavik
1. Skogafoss
Distance from Reykjavik: 150 kilometers (93 miles)
Skogafoss is often called one of the most iconic waterfalls in Iceland, making it a must-visit destination on the South Coast, even if it’s not the closest waterfall to Reykjavik. With a width of 25 meters and a height of 60 meters, Skogafoss is impressive not only in size but also in beauty, surrounded by lush greenery, vibrant valleys, and majestic mountains. This waterfall was one of my favorites in Iceland: its picturesque setting feels almost otherworldly. For those seeking a bit of adventure, there’s a path that leads to the top of the waterfall. The hike up offers spectacular panoramic views, but even if you don’t plan to hike, Skogafoss is worth planning a Reykjavik day trip.

2. Bruarfoss
Distance from Reykjavik: 95 kilometers (about 59 miles)
My favorite waterfall near Reykjavik is probably Bruarfoss. While it’s not as tall or powerful as the famous Gullfoss or Skogafoss, the mesmerizing shades of blue in its waters are truly captivating. I’ve never seen such vibrant hues anywhere else in the world. The entire landscape around Bruarfoss felt almost surreal. When I visited in August, it was also much less crowded than the more popular waterfalls. Since you can’t park right next to it, you’ll need to walk through lush greenery and winding paths before catching your first glimpse of Bruarfoss, which only adds to the adventure.

3. Seljalandsfoss
Distance from Reykjavik: 125 kilometers (78 miles)
Seljalandsfoss is a breathtaking waterfall that plunges 60 meters into a stunning gorge, surrounded by a landscape rich with tiny waterfalls and babbling streams. One of the most captivating aspects this waterfall is that you can actually walk behind the waterfall and enter a small cave, providing a spectacular view of the outside world framed by cascading water. However, be cautious as the path inside can be quite slippery due to the mist created by the waterfall. To fully enjoy the experience without getting wet, it’s highly recommended to wear a waterproof jacket or a raincoat.

4. Gullfoss
Distance from Reykjavik: 115 kilometers (about 71 miles)
Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most iconic landmarks and translates to “Golden Falls” in Icelandic. This stunning place ranks among the most visited sites in the entire country, partially due to its convenient location close to Reykjavik. Unlike most Icelandic waterfalls that are viewed from below, visitors can appreciate Gullfoss from an elevated point providing a breathtaking panoramic view of the water tumbling down.

5. Glymur
Distance from Reykjavik: 70 kilometers (around 43 miles)
Glymur, one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls at 198 meters (650 feet), is perfect for those who enjoy hiking. The round-trip hike takes about 3.5 hours and offers stunning views along the way. Located relatively close to Reykjavik, Glymur is a must-visit for adventure-seekers in Iceland. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and check the weather conditions in advance to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on this trail.

I only saw 3 of these on my first visit, so I definitely need to go back! Especially for Kirkjufellsfoss and Svartifoss. If I had the time and money, I’d even go twice, once in summer and once in winter to see the difference. Beautiful photos! #TheWeeklyPostcard
