Penelles – A Street Art Village in Catalonia

Street Art in Spain

The street art movement in Spain began in Madrid in the 80s, with the works of the local artist Muelle.

While lots of Spaniards enjoy graffiti these days, it is not always easy to find real works of art within the Spanish cities. The fine for painting walls illegally might reach 6000 euros and getting official permission to create vibrant murals in public spaces is not easy ( actually, nothing is fast or logical when it comes to the bureaucracy in Spain).

Nevertheless, these days a few unique Spanish villages are the artsy hubs for some of the best murals on the Iberian Peninsula. These are the places that decided to embrace street art and attract travelers from across the globe with their modern appeal.

As I have previously shared in my Fanzara post: many of these remote towns were initially on the list of Spain’s dying villages. Yet it was the street art that ended up saving them from disappearing and bringing thousands of visitors every year.

These are the top 5 small towns in Spain that have officially declared themselves open-air museums, by filling up the streets with vibrant murals:

For now, I have only visited Fanzara and Penelles. Next month I am planning to make a stop in Alfamen / Zaragoza and will share the details on the blog as well.

Visiting Penelles in Catalonia

This week I´m excited to share with you a new addition to my Blog Series Art Lovers – a photo gallery of unique murals of Penelles.

I finally got to visit this tiny Catalan village during my recent weekend in Lleida. Penelles is located just a couple of kilometers off road C-53, connecting Tarrega and Balaguer, in the province of Lleida / Catalonia.

The most typical thing to do in Penelles is to drop by the local Tourist Office for a map of murals and spend a few hours hunting for new street art creations. Nevertheless, since we visited early in the morning and everything was closed, we ended up using Google Maps. To my surprise, almost all of the current murals of Penelles were well-marked.

Below, you can enjoy a few of my favorites.
