Its moonlike views of Timanfaya, the lunar vineyards, and the paradise beaches with crystal-clear waters are well-known. However, as a plant lover, I couldn’t skip highlighting the Cactus Garden of Lanzarote (or Jardín de Cactus in Spanish) as one of the most beautiful gardens in Spain.

The Cactus Garden is the final architectural project of Lanzarote-born artist and architect Cesar Manrique, whose visionary works are still among the top landmarks of the island. Opened in 1990, this garden embodies Manrique’s philosophy of integrating art with nature. The curated layouts of the preserved volcanic rock formations serve as the garden’s canvas and create an open-air museum for over 1,400 different species of cactus from across the globe. Lanzarote’s Cactus Garden is considered one of the most important cactus gardens in the world.

Why You Should Get Inspired by Cactus Plants

With their distinct shapes, spiky exteriors, and ability to thrive in harsh environments, cactus plants have a special allure. I find it especially inspiring that such an amazing cactus garden can flourish in volcanic ash in the middle of nowhere. While Mediterranean gardens are beautiful, they often require more attention to grow.

How to get to Cactus Garden In Lanzarote

To visit the Cactus Garden in Lanzarote you can travel by car, organized tour, or bus. The first two options are the easiest.

Jardin de Cactus by car

Driving is the most convenient way to reach the Cactus Garden, as Lanzarote is a small island and the roads are easy to navigate. Back when we visited there was a free parking available at the garden.

From Arrecife (the capital of Lanzarote): It takes about 20 minutes to drive. Take the LZ-1 road heading north, following signs towards Guatiza, where the Cactus Garden is located.
From Playa Blanca: The drive takes around 45 minutes via the LZ-2 road heading towards Arrecife, then switch to LZ-1 heading north. Follow the signs to Guatiza.
From Costa Teguise: This is only a 15-minute drive. Take the LZ-1 road north, and follow the signs to Guatiza.

Jardin de Cactus by bus

Public transportation is another option, although it’s less direct than driving.

From Arrecife: Take bus number 52 from Arrecife towards Mala, which stops in Guatiza. You’ll need to walk about 10 minutes to reach the Cactus Garden from the bus stop.
From Costa Teguise: There are buses like number 9 that pass through Guatiza. You will also need to walk a short distance from the bus stop.

Many guided tours include the Cactus Garden as a stop, along with other César Manrique attractions on the island. You can book a full or half-day tour that includes transportation, making it an easy way to explore without the need for planning your route:

Exploring the Cactus Garden in Lanzarote

As I enjoyed a stroll through the carefully designed paths, it was easy to notice that the cactus plants were arranged to contrast the deep black volcanic soil and the vibrant blue sky. This combination creates a mesmerizing atmosphere that turns Cactus Garden into one of the most unique gardens in Spain. Do not miss:

Giant Windmill: The traditional Canarian windmill, beautifully restored, where visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views of the garden and the surrounding landscapes of Lanzarote.
Pond and Water Features: In the center of the garden, a serene pond filled with aquatic plants adds a refreshing contrast to the arid surroundings.
Sculptures: The garden also features several sculptures integrated into the natural landscape according to Manrique´s vision.

Tips for Visiting Lanzarote Cactus Garden

Best Time to Visit: The Cactus Garden is open year-round, but I recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
Wear Comfortable Shoes: The paths of the Cactus Garden are made of volcanic rocks, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes for walking.
Don’t Forget Sunscreen: Theres a little shade in the garden. Make sure to apply sunscreen and bring a hat or sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
