The city of Barcelona is known for its architectural masterpieces and bustling urban life, but the region surrounding the city holds a treasure trove of hidden gems just waiting to be explored. These off-the-beaten-path destinations provide a glimpse into Catalonia’s rich history without the crowds of more famous attractions. Sant Benet de Bages

Located in the peaceful countryside near Manresa, the Sant Benet Monastery is one of my favorite hidden gems near Barcelona. This architectural masterpiece beautifully blends medieval, modernist, and contemporary styles. The guided tours bring the history of this former Benedictine monastery to life through immersive multimedia presentations. Be sure to book your visit in advance, as they only offer guided tours.

How to get: Drive from Barcelona, approximately 1 hour via the C-16 highway, or take a train to Manresa and a short taxi ride.

Monestir de Sant Jeroni de la Murtra

This hidden monastery near Badalona is nestled in the Collserola mountain range. Sant Jeroni de la Murtra is a Gothic monastery where Christopher Columbus was once received by the Catholic Monarchs after his first voyage to the Americas.
