Best Time to Visit Madrid
As I’m in Madrid almost every month – after more than 15 years living as an expat in Spain, I’ve been lucky enough to experience the city in every season (you can explore all my Madrid tips and itineraries on the blog under the hashtag #Madrid).
To me, Madrid is always a great idea, no matter the time of year. Even when the weather isn’t at its best, the city still offers its unique museums, cozy cafés, and endless bookshops that make it worth visiting.
At the same time, May is one of the most exciting and important months in Madrid in terms of cultural life and Spanish festivals. This is when the famous San Isidro celebrations take place, filling the city with concerts, traditional festivities, local food, and a very special atmosphere that you simply don’t experience at any other time of the year.
So, if you’re curious not only about the artsy side of Spain but also about its traditions and celebrations, visiting Madrid in May is definitely for you. In addition, May and June are unique times to see roses in full bloom at El Retiro Park, which are among the most spectacular spring blooms in all of Spain.

Visiting Madrid in May
I’ve just returned from Madrid after attending the official presentation of the city’s festive month organized by the Madrid City Hall, and in this post I’ll share everything you need to know to plan your trip and make the most of Madrid this May.
This year, I also joined a chotis masterclass – the traditional Madrid dance you’ll see everywhere during the San Isidro celebrations – and it turned out to be such a fun way to connect with the local culture on a deeper level. Also, a local musician, Pablo Tedeka, gave a little live performance to showcase the single he performed especially for this year’s San Isidro Festival festivities (you can also watch the music video on YouTube below).
These workshops are usually organized by the local authorities and are open to everyone, although registration tends to fill up quickly, so it’s best to sign up at least a month in advance. This year’s classes took place on May 4 and 5 at the Centro Cultural Daoíz y Velarde. I’m sharing this now in case any of you would like to keep it in mind for next year’s May celebrations in Madrid. There will be other workshops during the festivities to learn the chotis on May 10 at Pradera de San Isidro and on May 12 at CMM Roger de Flor.
And if you want to see the fireworks in Madrid this May, they will take place on May 15 around 12 p.m. at the Pabellón de Convenciones, within the Recinto Ferial de la Casa de Campo. Also, for traditional chulapo outfits, you might enjoy the Re-Chulos fashion show at Las Vistillas on May 16 at 11:30 a.m.

The official agenda San Isidro celebrations is available in Spanish, but it’s actually very easy to navigate and spot the main event highlights. And honestly, with AI translation tools today, language is no longer really an issue when planning your trip.
What You Need to Know About The San Isidro Celebrations in Madrid
The San Isidro celebrations in Madrid are traditionally dedicated to the city’s patron saint and officially begin on May 7th with the traditional opening speech (pregón) at Casa de la Villa, followed by concerts and performances. From that moment on, the whole city transforms, with events spreading across different neighborhoods, plazas, and parks.
San Isidro Festival truly reflects the spirit of Madrid – open, welcoming, energetic, and full of life. One of the first things you’ll notice is people dressed in traditional outfits, chulapos and chulapas, alongside traditional chotis dancing in the streets. There are also some iconic traditions you shouldn’t miss, like the parade of gigantes y cabezudos (giant figures) and live music performances taking place all over the city.
Some of the main locations for San Isidro events include Plaza Mayor, Las Vistillas, Pradera de San Isidro, and Matadero Madrid, although many more events are listed across the city in Madrid’s cultural agenda. One of the newest additions this year is “La Hora del Vermú”, a concept that combines traditional Madrid vibes with live music. Matadero Madrid, one of the city’s most unique cultural centers, also hosts special events during May, turning into a modern-style verbena filled with concerts, exhibitions, and performances.
Food is also a huge part of San Isidro. You’ll find traditional dishes like cocido madrileño, alongside more contemporary interpretations of local classics and pastries. There are also food tastings and gastronomic events happening throughout the city, especially in local markets of Madrid.
Most Beautiful Blooms in Madrid in May
One of my personal highlights of visiting Madrid in May is the La Rosaleda in El Retiro Park. During May and early June, this area is in full bloom, with roses from all over the world. It’s honestly one of the prettiest spots in the city at this time of year and a perfect place for a walk.
There are usually people around, but I visited around 7 p.m., and it was such a joy to stroll through it with all the colours and scents in the middle of a huge city. The full photo gallery of roses in Madrid is in this IG carousel.
Weather in Madrid in May
Temperatures in May are usually very pleasant for exploring the city, going on long walks, or planning road trips and day trips across the region – much better than during the peak summer season. Daytime averages are around 20–26°C (68–79°F), while mornings and evenings are cooler, around 10–15°C (50–59°F).
During my trip to Madrid, I mostly wore layers. In the mornings and evenings (or on slightly rainy days), a light jacket, long sleeves, or a hoodie is essential, but during the day – especially when the sun is out – I was often just in a T-shirt. So, adding layers to your Spain Packing List is a must if you’re visiting Madrid in May.
Is it worth visiting Madrid in May?
Overall, visiting Madrid in May is a great idea if you’re looking for a vibrant city break. It offers a mix of pleasant weather, cultural events, and a glimpse into local festivities that are so central to Spanish culture, thanks to San Isidro Festival. It’s one of those times when the city feels especially alive.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for more quiet and fewer crowds, early autumn might be a better choice.
