Here are the best areas to stay in Fuerteventura for first-timers, based on my recent trip to this stunning island. During my visit, I had the chance to explore all of the island’s most popular areas, driving around and soaking in the diverse landscapes, so I could get a feel for where travelers typically stay when visiting Fuerteventura.

My Honest Impressions of the Best Areas to Stay in Fuerteventura

While Fuerteventura is one of Spain’s top islands, it still feels far less explored than Tenerife, Lanzarote, or even Gran Canaria.

For years, Fuerteventura has been a favorite for travelers seeking some of Spain’s best beaches and surf spots, making it a top choice for adventure lovers. On my recent visit this November, however, I was surprised by how much the island is evolving – especially when it comes to attracting families. New hotels and roads are being developed, and there’s a noticeable growth in tours and activities designed to add more variety and value beyond the classic beach holiday.

For decades, the island has been known for its wild coastline, volcanic landscapes, and laid-back atmosphere. Yet compared to its neighboring Canary Islands, it still feels like an emerging destination for international travelers – particularly for those looking for a more diverse vacation, great hikes, or planning a trip to Spain with kids.

That said, some infrastructure still needs improvement, and certain Fuerteventura roads could use renovation. So if you’re visiting for the first time, deciding where to stay can feel overwhelming. Based on my recent impressions, here’s a breakdown of the best areas on the island to help you make an informed choice.

1. Morro Jable: The Popular & Social Spot

Morro Jable is one of the most popular and vibrant areas on the island, known for its trendy shops, lively restaurants, and dynamic atmosphere. It’s a great option for those looking to experience the social side of Fuerteventura, with plenty of places to explore and a vibrant nightlife scene. The beach here is always quite busy and not huge, but for a quieter beach experience, you don’t have to go far. Right nearby, you’ll find Playa de Jandía (including my favorite Playa de Sotavento area).

Also, near Morro Jable you can stay in Jandía or Costa Calma. In a nutshell, these are quieter options, while still being close to the restaurants, shops, and social life of Morro Jable.

2. Corralejo: The Island’s Main Hub

Although the official capital of Fuerteventura is Puerto del Rosario, Corralejo is often considered the heart of the island. It’s the largest and most well-known town, offering everything from vibrant shops to delicious restaurants. What sets Corralejo apart is its perfect location for day trips – the ferries to Lanzarote and Isla de Lobos depart from here, making it an ideal base if you want to explore beyond Fuerteventura.

In the photos below, you can see two RIU resorts – Hotel Riu Oliva Beach Resort and Hotel Riu Palace Tres Islas – both dramatically set within the dunes of Parque Natural de Corralejo.

As I was driving through the park, the sight of these large white buildings rising from the sand looked almost surreal, so I had to stop and take a photo. It’s quite striking to see hotels located within what is now a protected natural area, especially considering that new construction in protected zones in Spain is generally no longer permitted.

Hotel Riu Oliva Beach Resort is a 3-star property with average reviews, while Hotel Riu Palace Tres Islas tends to receive good ratings and offers one of the most upscale experiences on the island thanks to its exclusive location. 3. Caleta de Fuste: Family-Friendly Relaxation

During my visit to Fuerteventura in November, I stayed in Caleta de Fuste, and it turned out to be a fantastic choice for families. This area is known for its calm waters and sheltered bay, making it perfect for families with small children or anyone looking to relax by the sea. The beach here is much quieter than Morro Jable or Corralejo, and the gentle waves make it ideal for swimming.

There’s also a long, pleasant promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and a few playgrounds for the little ones. The area is family-oriented, making it an excellent choice for those traveling with baby strollers or toddlers.

One thing to note from my personal experience: Caleta de Fuste is located relatively close to the airport, so you might occasionally hear planes flying overhead during takeoff and landing. For me, this wasn’t a problem, but if you’re a sensitive sleeper, you might want to keep this in mind.

4. El Cotillo: A Quiet Escape for Couples & Solo Travelers

If you prefer a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere, El Cotillo is a great area to stay in Fuerteventura. Located on the northwest coast, this peaceful village offers a much slower pace of life compared to the more touristy spots like Corralejo or Morro Jable. El Cotillo is ideal for those seeking tranquility and local charm. Keep in mind that there are no major hotels in this area at the moment; it is mostly holiday apartments that you can find in Corralejo. However, the prices are quite budget-friendly compared to the more popular areas of the island.

However, during my visit in November, I noticed quite a bit of construction happening in El Cotillo. This is because the area is becoming more popular with tourists, and development is underway to accommodate growing demand. So for now, it’s something to consider if you’re seeking total peace and quiet. Personally, I think I’d choose this spot to stay on my next trip to Fuerteventura.

5. Inland Small Towns & Budget-Friendly & Peaceful

For those who prefer a more rural and budget-friendly stay, there are several small inland towns that offer a completely different side of Fuerteventura. La Oliva, for example, is a great option if you’re looking to rent a traditional rural house or apartment. While you’ll need a car to reach the beaches, staying here allows you to fully appreciate the island’s volcanic landscapes and enjoy a slower, more peaceful atmosphere away from the main tourist hubs. Other charming inland alternatives include Betancuria – the island’s historic former capital – and Triquivijate.

On the coast, Ajuy is another small yet popular village known for its laid-back vibe. Although many visitors come here to explore the famous sea caves, the town itself feels much quieter than the main resort areas. However, the beach, as you can see in the photos, is volcanic with dark sand and can be quite wavy.

6. Puerto del Rosario: The Capital, But Not Ideal for Tourists Right Now

Puerto del Rosario, the official capital of Fuerteventura, is not typically a top destination for tourists, and I would not necessarily recommend it for first-timers at this moment. While you can find budget-friendly accommodations here, my recent experience was not the best due to heavy roadworks and frequent traffic jams.

The ongoing construction and renovations around the city are necessary for the island’s development, but during my visit, navigating Puerto del Rosario was challenging. I ended up stuck in traffic numerous times, and delays were common. For this reason, it’s best to avoid staying in the capital in 2026 unless you’re there for specific reasons.

Boutique Hotels in Fuerteventura

Overall, my impression after visiting the island is that although a few major hotel chains are already present, the widest range of accommodation options consists of holiday apartments. There are also a few great boutique-style hotels, such as Hotel La Marquesina in Corralejo and Hotel XQ Palacete in Morro Jable.

Best Resorts in Fuerteventura

If you’re looking for an epic resort stay in Fuerteventura, your best options are in Corralejo and Morro Jable: Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace, Secrets Bahía Real Resort & Spa (Adults Only), and Iberostar Waves Playa Gaviotas (All Inclusive).
