Where to Stay in Gran Canaria: Best Areas for First-Timers
Tips for booking accommodation in Gran Canaria
If you’re planning a trip to Gran Canaria for the first time, this post shares my impressions of the island’s different areas. I’ve also included plenty of photos so you can get a feel for each region and see which type of landscape in Gran Canaria inspires you most.
Choosing where to stay in Gran Canaria is quite subjective and depends on your budget and travel style. What I love about the island is that each area offers a different travel experience – from vibrant, social getaways to quiet retreats.
One thing I noticed while booking our stay in Gran Canaria is that, unlike many other Spanish islands popular for spontaneous trips, Gran Canaria tends to be reserved well in advance (sometimes a year ahead). For example, when I checked hotels and apartments on Booking.com six months before our trip, more than 92% of places were already booked.
So, if you’re booking last minute or just a few months in advance, the best value for money will usually be in Las Palmas. But if you don’t mind splurging on your Gran Canaria trip, luxury hotels in Maspalomas or near Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria tend to have availability as well.

Best areas to stay in Gran Canaria for First-timers
1. Las Palmas
If you’re visiting Gran Canaria without a car and plan to explore the island via local buses, basing yourself in the island’s capital, Las Palmas, is a smart choice – it’s perfectly connected to the rest of the island. For our 5-day Gran Canaria itinerary, we stayed at the budget-friendly Livvo Fataga, and overall, I was happy with how the trip turned out.
Since we weren’t as interested in a beach holiday and wanted to get a full glimpse of the island, Las Palmas felt like the perfect base for a first-time visit. Plus, if you’re traveling with kids, it’s a great option, with attractions like the Poema del Mar Aquarium, the Elder Science Museum, and Museo Canario, as well as plenty of restaurants and cafes (especially helpful if, like me, you have picky eaters in the family).
However, after exploring other areas of Gran Canaria, I have to admit that Las Palmas wasn’t my favorite when it comes to landscapes. Still, for those not planning to rent a car, booking last minute, or looking for good value for money, it’s definitely a solid option.
Hotel Recommendations
Budget-Friendly: Hotel The Cathedral Vegueta
Best value for money: Boutique Hotel Cordial Malteses
Best Hotel: Santa Catalina Royal Hideaway
Top Apartment Pick: Valentina Beach

2. Maspalomas
Maspalomas is the ideal choice for travelers looking to combine a beach holiday with vibrant social life. It felt like the liveliest area of Gran Canaria, brimming with bars, restaurants, and energy. It really reminded me of Benidorm. The beaches of Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés are some of the most popular on the island, and the stunning Maspalomas Dunes are among the most beautiful landscapes in all of Spain.
For those visiting Gran Canaria with kids, Maspalomas is also a great spot, thanks to its abundance of family-friendly hotels and attractions like Palmitos Park. Plus, if you’re staying in Maspalomas, you’ll be well-connected to many other island destinations. I’d say it’s the second best-connected area after Las Palmas. We traveled by bus, and the return service to Las Palmas was nearly every 15 minutes. Additionally, you’ll find plenty of day trips available on platforms like GetYourGuide or Viator from Maspalomas.
So, if you’re looking for a more social vacation with beautiful beaches and the option to take occasional day trips around the island, Maspalomas is a fantastic choice to stay in Gran Canaria. It’s also a well-known favorite among LGBTQ+ travelers, with trendy hotels like Vista Bonita.
That said, Maspalomas isn’t the most budget-friendly area – most hotels start at around €180 per night. So, if you’re planning to stay here, you need to book in advance an be prepared for higher accommodation costs compared to other parts of the island.
Hotel Recommendations
Best value for money: Servatur Playa Bonita
Best Hotel: Hotel Faro Lopesan Collection
Top Apartment Pick: Place Oasis Green Luxury Pool

3. Puerto de Mogan
Puerto de Mogán was one of my favorite places during our Gran Canaria itinerary. When I return to the island, I think I’d love to stay in this area. It’s the most picturesque town on the island, with plenty of seafood restaurants and beach cafes. Puerto de Mogán is also relatively well-connected by bus to the capital, Las Palmas, as well as the nearby beaches of Puerto Rico and Playa de Amadores.
If your plan for Gran Canaria is to enjoy sunny beach hotels, fresh local seafood, and charming, picture-perfect small towns, this is an excellent spot. To explore the island extensively while staying in Puerto de Mogán, I recommend renting a car (I usually use DiscoverCars, as they offer the best comparison of local and international providers, making it easy to choose).
However, if you’re after a laid-back beach vacation with the option of a day trip to Las Palmas or Maspalomas, you can easily stay in Puerto de Mogán without needing a car.
Hotel Recommendations
Best value for money: H10 Costa Mogán
Best Hotel: Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa
Top Apartment Pick: Apartamentos Cordial Mogán Valle

4. Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is another popular beach area in Gran Canaria, and it’s quite similar to Puerto de Mogán. In fact, if you’re taking the bus to or from Las Palmas, the same route will take you to both Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán – Puerto Rico is just a little closer to the island’s capital.
Overall, Puerto Rico would suit a similar vacation plan to Puerto de Mogán. The decision on where to stay mostly comes down to which hotel you prefer. There’s only about 10 km separating Puerto de Mogán and Puerto Rico, with frequent bus services connecting the two, as well as easy access to other major hubs on the island, like Maspalomas and Las Palmas.
Hotel Recommendations
Budget-Friendly: Servatur Eden & Buganvillas
Best value for money: Servatur Hartaguna
Best Hotel: Radisson Blu Resort Gran Canaria (2.7 km from Puerto Rico)
Top Apartment Pick: Morasol Suites

5. Agaete (or Galdar)
Agaete is a nice area to stay in the north of the island, but it mostly appeals to people who prefer quieter stays and unspoiled nature. My kids really enjoyed exploring Agaete lava pools, and the nearby town of Gáldar exceeded our expectations, especially with its fascinating Cueva Pintada Museum. The northern part of Gran Canaria is rainier than the south, and you won’t find picture-perfect white sand beaches here.
When we visited in July, the area had only a few cafés, and bus services were much less frequent compared to Maspalomas or Puerto de Mogán. We even got caught in a brief shower, and it was quite windy – though refreshing. For this reason, I’d recommend renting a car if you plan to stay in Agaete.
Overall, I’d choose Agaete as a base in Gran Canaria if I were looking for an unplugged kind of holiday or a romantic getaway away from the crowds and touristy areas. Both Agaete and Gáldar are also great for budget travelers, as accommodation here tends to be cheaper.
Hotel Recommendations
Best value for money: Hotel Emblemático Agáldar
Best Hotel: Occidental Roca Negra
Top Apartment Pick: La Casita de Juani

6. Arucas (or Moya)
Arucas is a charming small town in Gran Canaria, located close to the capital, Las Palmas, yet offering a quieter place to stay near several landmarks. In Arucas, you’ll find the famous Arehucas Rum Distillery, banana plantations such as Mundo del Plátano, one of the island’s most unique cathedrals, and the beautiful Jardín de la Marquesa, a must-see for garden lovers in Spain. There are no traditional hotels in Arucas – accommodation is mostly apartments. However, if you’re looking for a boutique hotel experience, the charming Dreamsea Boutique Experience in the village of Moya (about a 20-minute drive from Arucas) is a lovely option.
The town is well connected to Las Palmas by bus, and even a taxi ride to the capital takes only about 15 minutes. However, Arucas is not the best option for a classic white-sand beach holiday, as the nearest coastal spots are the lava rock pools of Los Charcones.
Hotel Recommendations
Best value for money: Mary’s Home (in Moya)
Best Hotel: Dreamsea Boutique Experience (in Moya)
Top Apartment Pick: El Alpendre

7. Tejeda
Tejeda is the only popular destination in Gran Canaria I haven’t visited yet, mainly because you really need a car to explore it. Getting there by bus takes more than two hours one way, even from the well-connected capital of Las Palmas.
Tejeda is considered one of the most beautiful small towns in Spain, so I definitely plan to visit it on my next Gran Canaria road trip. The nearby village of Cruz de Tejeda is also a great place to stay if you’re planning to enjoy hiking on the island (That wasn’t part of our plan, since we were traveling with two seniors with reduced mobility.)
Not being able to explore Tejeda and the island’s hiking trails has left me with a strong desire to return to Gran Canaria – hopefully soon!
Hotel Recommendations
Budget-Friendly: Hostel Finca La Isa by Rose
Best value for money: Casa Cueva Tejeda
Best Hotel: Parador de Cruz de Tejeda
Top Apartment Pick: Calma Suites Tejeda

Best area to stay in Gran Canaria
While choosing the best area to stay in Gran Canaria largely depends on your budget and the type of vacation you’re looking for, here are my impressions:
- Puerto de Mogán & Puerto Rico – Perfect for picture-perfect beaches, luxury hotels, and boat tours.
- Maspalomas – Also known for its beautiful beaches and luxury hotels, but with a busier, more social vibe. It’s especially popular among LGBTQ+ travelers and a great choice if you plan to enjoy nightlife.
- Las Palmas (the capital) – Great for budget-friendly accommodation, with excellent bus connections to the rest of the island, making car rental optional.
- Arucas, Gáldar & Agaete – Ideal if you want to rent an apartment from locals and enjoy a quieter, budget-friendly atmosphere. Keep in mind these areas require a rental car to get around efficiently, and they’re better known for natural lava pools than sandy beaches.
- Tejeda & Cruz de Tejeda – The best spots if you love volcanic landscapes and plan to do a lot of hiking.
