Greece is one of my all time favorite travel destinations (Read more about my travel bucket list). Charming villages, tiny streets, a surreal white-blue architecture, crystal clear water, cordial greek mentality and the most amazing food ever… A spirit of family and traditions is everywhere – Greece feels like home, no matter where you come from…
After all these years of traveling to this amazing country – let me to sum up my top 5 experiences that will make you to fall in love with this country.
If only the World won’t be so big – I´d always end up somewhere in Greece… ok… I´m ready to go back to Greece every summer! Next time I would probably head to Cephalonia, Corfu, Naxos or Paros. But coming back – for sure !
1.Olimpia : Where it all started
Olympia was famous beyond the Greek borders for hosting the Olympic Games every four years, starting in 776 BCE. Can you imagine?! – It all started here. And even though the stadium was smaller than I expected (honestly, if no one told me it was THE stadium – I’d never guess) – being able to visit the birthplace of the modern Olímpic Games was such an experience.
Prytaneion / Where the guests of honor and visitors at The Olympic games were feasted
2.Athens : Visiting Acropolis
The universal symbol of the impressive Greek civilization – what can you add to this?! And as much as Athens felt like not my kind of city at all, walking through the remains of all these temples definitely gave me some inspiration to dive into the history books and Greek Mythology. Besides, the views were simply wonderful.
Mykonos is definitely the fanciest island in Greece: everything is overpriced and yet you can’t help falling in love with these white houses. It is supposed to be a great place for parties&nightlife, which in our case was narrowed down to dining out (- I know,we are boring married couple: can´t help it).
And by the way, you know how Mykonos is famous for its beaches and blue see-through waters, right? Well, I stepped on a sea urchin there! So keep this in mind – you can’t swim everywhere (no matter how crystal the water looks), so make sure to visit one of the official beaches! (Read more)
5.Getting lost on Crete
Crete is quite important in the Greek history, any ideas why? – Well, the almighty Zeus was born here. Therefore, aside from all the paradise beaches and charming little villages across the island – Crete is full of unique historic sites.
Moreover, once you drive away from the touristic places and big main cities – you still can discover the authentic Greek island lifestyle. I haven’t had this experience on any other Greek island. Maybe, cause Crete was the biggest: driving trough all those mountain roads towards Kato Zakros (where we stayed) was an experience itself. A couple of times we stopped near old local villages with no tourists on the radar and at times it even felt like we time-traveled. (Read more).
6.Santorini: Views of a lifetime
Oía – one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. These views will leave you speechless, it’s one of those places you must see at least once in a lifetime (Read more).
